Heyla!

Halloween magic has happened yet again. The Howell E.R. saw plenty of "patients" and proved that candy IS the best medicine. This year I introduced a new surgical resident, Dr. Ben Butler. He was a real hit. People were losing their heads over him!

Also, Jill was a rainbow for Halloween!

Here is the 2021 Howell ER hospital video posted on YouTube. Click on the picture.

NaNoWriMo starts today! Who are my participating peeps?
I first used the platform two years ago and won by finishing The Lost Temple of Psiere. Unfortunately last year was difficult for my creativity and I didn't win with Elemental Attraction. Obviously, I eventually finished the book in 2021. Seeing how it brought me luck with book 2 in the Mystery of the Makers trilogy, I'm attempting to finish book 3 in November. This may be difficult for reasons I'll list in Topic #3 and #4.

That being said, if you want to be my buddy, you can find me here: NaNoWriMo KAten Profile

Author Spotlight Introduction
Welcome to November where you can read about this month's spectacular Author Astronaut of the Month, Adrian J. Smith. Adrian has been publishing since 2013 but has been writing nearly her entire life. With a focus on women loving women fiction, AJ jumps genres from action-packed police procedurals to the seedier life of vampires and witches to sweet romances with a May-December twist. She loves writing and reading about women in the midst of the ordinariness of life. Two of her novels, For by Grace and Memoir in the Making, received honorable mentions with the Rainbow Awards.

AJ currently lives in Cheyenne, WY, although she moves often and has lived all over the United States. She loves to travel to different countries and places. She currently plays the roles of author, wife, and mother to two rambunctious toddlers, occasional handy-woman. Connect with her on Facebook, Twitter, or her blog.

As of October 25th I started working as a direct employee at my current company instead of the long-term staff member that I'd been for the previous 7+ years. While I get better benefits, I'm also significantly busier so it has been tough on my writing production. I'm hoping to find a healthy work-life balance soon.

Taste Tests

In case you missed it last month (and for the new folks), or you're really bored, you can watch an author taste test food and/or alcohol with her wife to kill time. (Despite the look on her face, the wife is consenting, I swear!) Click below for our full YouTube playlist.

Writing Updates:

  • I'm nearly 50,000 words into The Rebels of Psiere and have plans to use the NaNoWriMo platform to make a major dent in this novel.
  • So, as you may remember, I was working on a #supercorp Halloween story called It Was the End of Days, on AO3. I apologize to everyone who was following it because I haven't updated in quite a while. Usually I just write the entire fic, then post it so I don't run into this motivation/time issue. Speaking of writing an entire fanfic...
  • I had this crazy new alt-universe idea for a Supergirl fanfic, a sort of "what if" story. I obsessed about the idea for hours until I wrote it down. The summary came to nearly 2000 words and I knew I had to get it on paper else it wouldn't leave me alone. So yeah, I have been writing but not working on the stuff I SHOULD work on. My muse is fickle and The Last Scion of El needed to be told. I've written 30,000 words in the last six days. I guess pumping out 50,000 over the entire month of November should be a breeze, right? LOL. Anyway, this story will go up on AO3 when it's finished. Who knows, it may get converted to a novel if it's long enough. I hate wasting all this writing effort when I'm supposed to keep my publisher happy.

Use the links and logos in my signature line to find me elsewhere. OTW Member logo will take you to my AO3 fanfic page, where you can read free fiction to your heart's content. Flashpoint logo takes you to my publisher author page, etc.

As always, thank you for your continued support, because a voice is nothing without people to hear. Read, rate, and review. I'm always glad to answer emails and love to see feedback. Drop me a line for all questions, comments, and criticisms. I genuinely want to get better and I'm open to all. Thank you, friends!

[START AUTHOR TRANSMISSION]

Name: Adrian J. Smith
Publisher: Supposed Crimes LLC
Reason you started writing: To get these crazy stories and women OUT OF MY HEAD.
K. Aten notes: I feel like that is the origin story for many of us writers.
Next book to release & when: Broken & Weary (Missing Persons #2) will be released December 1, 2021
Why we should read it: Because Detective Grace Halling is probably the most kick ass character I have ever written, I love her to death, and she needs to be real so I can steal her away from Amya. She is my book girlfriend, or rather my book wife. K. Aten notes: Rule #33 of writing, once the woman is on the page she becomes EVERYONE's book girlfriend/wife. Dems da rules.
Genres that you've written: I write all genres just about: romance (always May/December or age gap), crime/mystery, thriller, urban fantasy, paranormal romance, science fiction, erotica.
List of published books:

  • James Matthews Series:  Forever Burn, Dying Embers, Ashes Fall
  • Spirit of Grace Series:  For by Grace, Fallen from Grace, Grace through Redemption
  • Missing Persons – Detective Grace:  Lost & Forsaken, Broken & Weary (Coming December 2021)
  • Quarter Life Series:  Unbound, De-Termination, Release
  • Memoir in the Making
  • OBlique
  • Love Burns
  • About Time

Name something you're proud of in regards to your writing: I’m proud of the fact that I have created characters that readers have absolutely fallen in love with and continuously want to see more and more of them because I do too! K. Aten notes: Excellent reason!

Click HERE to see all of AJ's books on Amazon.US.

Cats or Dogs: Cats 🐈🐱
Coffee/Tea/Water: Tea but really Dr. Pepper K. Aten notes: Dr. Pepper rules!
Weapon of choice during Zombie Apocalypse: My brain (read that as you will) K. Aten notes: I mean, technically that would be my first weapon as well.
Hobbies: Crocheting, fishing. 🧶🎣🐟
Do you fanfic? If so, favorite ship: I do!!! Helen/Will from Sanctuary hands down. I’m Arones on FFN or AO3K. Aten notes: Click the fan fiction site to go to AJ's profile.

Broken & Weary (Missing Persons #2) by Adrian J. Smith
(Coming December 1, 2021)

With two new cases in hand, Detective Grace Halling is determined to solve them before Christmas. A missing teenage foster kid Grace suspects is running from something bigger than anyone knows, and a missing middle-aged dad walked out of his front door without his shoes in the dead of winter.

Meanwhile, Amya’s parents are in town for the holiday, Peter’s home from seminary for the break, and a new kid crashes on Grace’s couch after being kicked out of her house. Grace can barely keep up. Focused on happy endings, Grace can’t help the feeling someone might break before she can save them.

Grace has never been so intent on righting wrongs.
