#145: Who will win Media's Game of Thrones?

Dear AJVC Reader,

Hang on to your seats. If India loses to NZ tomorrow, it might be all over for us in the T20 WC campaign.

But that is not the case for Nykaa. A landmark moment for women founders in Bharat is unfolding as Nykaa gears up for its $7Bn listing.

In many ways, Falguni Nayyar defied contemporary "rules" to build a unicorn, that too a profitable one. You have our respect.

Not the only unicorn in town though. So to speak, the new IPL teams have debuted as 🦄s in the latest bidding auction!

Speaking of new names in the fray,  "The" Facebook is now Meta. After dropping the "The", the next big change for FB is now. So says the security experts.

Some big change for Musk too, after he gained 'just' a few tens of billions in a single day after Tesla spike. We don't know the spike in his crypto portfolio though. His social media tinkering can alone take the Doge to the moon.

Talking of media, what on earth is happening in Indian media?
The Story
Who Will Win Media's Game of Thrones?

Last fortnight, Zee and Invesco continued their major tussle, hot on the heels of Disney+Hotstar breaking records with the IPL and Facebook rebranding itself to Meta.

"Long years ago, we made a tryst with destiny" - the day James Hicky published the first edition of The Bengal Gazette, he had no idea that one day his voice would resonate with millions and echo India's Independence struggles.

It would also spark the Indian media revolution.

Since then, before Zuck changed the definition of media as we know it, the Indian household, irrespective of any discrimination, had an indispensable relationship with All India Radio and Doordarshan.

The entry of TV, soap operas, OTT, social media over the past few decades have made Indian media a hugely competitive space.

The 00's kids now obviously want to become YouTubers and influencers, given the ultra-lucrative careers that the most successful creators enjoy.

As Zee and Invesco fight it out publicly, there are numerous players trying to go after the media throne. News, entertainment and social all have their winners.

The king, whose attention generations of companies have fought for, is the consumer. As we deep dive into the decade long history of the fight for consumer attention, who will win media's Game of Thrones?
