Welcome

In this our opening newsletter of the year, we would like to welcome the entire CBS Kilkenny Community to the 2021/22 academic year, and in particular to extend a sincere welcome to all of our new students, teachers, parents & guardians.

You are about to begin a new and exciting time in your lives which we are proud to be able to share with you. CBS Kilkenny is a dynamic and progressive community of learners that is continuing to grow and thrive and which will offer you so many opportunities for learning, fun and friendship, both inside and outside of the classroom. We are delighted to welcome you into our community. We encourage you all to play an active role in our school during your time here and to embrace the many opportunities for participation which it will offer you across our many student and parent/guardian bodies, our clubs, teams, activities, and initiatives.

We look forward to witnessing your exploits in the years to come and to celebrating and sharing them with the wider CBS Kilkenny Community here in our newsletter. As school life begins to slowly inch towards normality, we very much welcome the gradual return of the myriad of diverse activities that are such an integral part of life in our school and eagerly anticipate a time when the remaining restrictions on school life necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic are a thing of the past.

You can be sure that every new exploit, triumph, and achievement will be reported here!

Wishing you every good fortune for the year ahead,

Everyone @cbskilkenny

All-Ireland Minor Hurling Team of the Year

The new academic year had barely thrown in when we received the wonderful news that our very own Gearoid Dunne had been selected on the All-Ireland Minor Hurling Team of the Year. Much like the competition’s very own tagline, we felt that it was pretty major!

Well done Gearoid. We are very proud of you and know that your achievements will inspire all our young hurlers in the year ahead.
Opening Mass 2021

This year, thanks to the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, we were once again able to gather as a school community to celebrate the beginning of the school year in St Mary’s Cathedral in early October.

Our Chaplain Fr Jim Murphy celebrated two services on successive days, one for the junior students and one for the senior students, with Ms Dowling, Ms Evison and our choirs providing wonderful music on both occasions.

Sincere thanks to Fr Jim, Ms Dowling, Ms Evison, Ms Kehoe and the entire Religion Department for planning and arranging these services which coincided with the twenty fifth anniversary of the beatification of our school founder, Blessed Edmund Rice.

Outstanding Support From Past Pupils Union

We are very grateful to former students of CBS Kilkenny who recently made a very generous donation to our new school development fund.

Under the leadership of Mr Sean Breathnach (former Deputy Principal, CBS Secondary School Kilkenny), Mr Denis O'Reilly (former Principal, CBS Primary School Kilkenny), Mr Donal Gibbons and Mr Noel Lanigan, the Past Pupils Union (PPU) has always supported the work and development of both CBS schools in Kilkenny city.

Their patronage, enduring loyalty and interest in their alma mater, CBS Kilkenny, is highly valued and deeply appreciated.

Open Night 2021

Following on from the success of last year's Virtual Open Night, on Wednesday, October 13th, we did it all again!

Thanks to the magnificent work of Mr Doherty and all the Open Night Committee, a little technical know how from Mr Cleere and a sprinkling of creative brilliance from our friends at Dicemen Productions, we moved to a live webinar for this year's event. Many thanks to all the students, staff and parents who contributed greatly to this successful occasion.

Literacy Week 2021

Literacy Week took place this year from October 11-15th and the organising committee outdid themselves with a packed calendar of events.

Under the guidance of Mr Hanley, Literacy Week began with the visit of author and former Tipperary hurler Paddy Stapleton, to discuss the writing and publication of his recent book Up in the Air with 1st and 2nd Year students.

The schedule also included cinema visits for our 3rd and 5th Year students, competitive debating with the students from Presentation Kilkenny, a bumper Transition Year quiz, a visit from Khan Kiely of Khan’s Books, Drop Everything and Read classes, the launch of both CBS Kilkenny Francis MacManus and Tim MacGabhann Short Story Competitions and a host of daily competitions. Phew! Phenomenal work Literacy week Committee!

Sincere thanks to all our guest contributors and to all our students and staff for once more helping to make it such an enjoyable week.
Those That Can – Teach!

Congratulations were due in September to Mr Boyle who was shortlisted for the prestigious RTE Francis MacManus Short Story Competition 2021 from nearly 3000 entries.

Mr Boyle has run our very own CBS Kilkenny Francis MacManus Short Story Competitions in honour of our alumni Francis MacManus since he establlished them in 2004.

You can read or listen to Mr Boyle's story by copying the link below into your browser.

Irish Sports Internationals

This term saw two CBS Kilkenny sporting stars don the green jersey to represent their country.

In September, Billy Coogan represented CBS Kilkenny and Ireland in the 1500m steeplechase at The International Track & Field Championships in Derby, England, finishing in 6th place and setting a new personal best, while Brian Moore lined out for the U-16 Republic of Ireland football team, hitting a stunning hat-trick in their 6-0 victory over Malta.

Well done boys. We are very proud of you both.
CBS Kilkenny Tractor Run

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!

The inaugural CBS Kilkenny Tractor Run is expected to take place in November. At the time of going to print the original date as communicated on social media has had to be withdrawn due to unforseen circumstances, though it is fully expected that we will be bringing you news of this novel and worthwhile initiative in our Christmas newsletter.

All proceeds from the event will be divided evenly between Cois Nore Cancer Support and the CBS Kilkenny Development Fund, so give your tractor a day out before Christmas and come along to support these two great causes. Registration will cost €20 and all are welcome.

Hurling Blitz
Well done to all of our young hurlers who competed in the 1st Year Hurling Blitz in St Kieran’s College and O’Loughlin’s GAA Club in October. It was great to see so many of you back active and pulling on the CBS Kilkenny shirt for the first time. We look forward to nurturing your talents and watching your progress in the years ahead.
