Dear members,

The autumn has well and truly advanced here in southern Finland, where we had night frosts last night. I hope you’re all having a sunny, suitably busy autumn. We have several engaging and fun events planned over the next few months: please see below for details. The NEaT board met on 7 September to approve new members and decide on the dates for events, and it will meet again on 10 November. If you have any questions about the work of the board or would like to suggest a matter for the board’s consideration, please don’t hesitate to email info@nordicedit.fi, or contact me personally at iainmace@gmail.com or +358 44 313 2816.

Best wishes,
Ian Mac Eochagáin
chairman of the board, NEaT
A lively calendar of events!

Hanna-Mari Pienimäki to defend her doctoral dissertation on Friday, 29 October
Hanna-Mari Pienimäki, who studied quite a few NEaT members and presented at our English Today seminar in 2019, will defend her doctoral dissertation entitled "Language professionals as regulators of academic discourse" (Kieliasiantuntijat akateemisen kielen säätelijöinä) in the Faculty of Arts, University of Helsinki, on 29 October 2021 at 13:00 local time. Read more about the event here.

NEaT after-work chat on Tuesday, 9 November at 17.00–18.00 EET (16.00–17.00 CET)
Join us for a NEaTup after work! We will chat about what it is like to work in Sweden. NEaT members Robin Blanton and Charlotte Merton will talk with us about working in the Swedish context, setting up as a sole trader and dealing with the issues that arise when working in another country.  Whether you have specific questions about working in Sweden or you would just like to compare your experience with other language professionals, you are welcome to join us for an hour at 17:00 EET on Tuesday, 9 November.

Session on tech tools on Tuesday, 16 November at 18.00 EET
Want to know more about tech tools that we language professionals could use to make our work easier? Are there tools you’ve often wondered about but never got around to learning about? Kenneth Quek will talk to you about these different tools for an hour at 18:00 EET on Tuesday, 16 November. Look out for his questionnaire and the signup link on the NEaT google mailing list and let him know what tools you would like to learn about.

Save the date for a NEaT Christmas Party: Friday, 3 December

We’d like to celebrate the holidays with you at our end-of-the-year party on Friday, December 3 at 18.00. We’ve reserved our usual spot in Helsinki at Säästöpankinranta 4, but the event committee will also look for ways to allow people to join remotely if they wish. You don’t have to live in Helsinki to join us this year! We’d love to celebrate with all of you.

More details will be coming later, so watch this space!
NEaT members presented your views at METM21

Kate Sotejeff-Wilson and Alice Lehtinen gave a presentation on 15 October entitled "Language professionals as cultural mediators: whose style matters?" They presented the results of the survey that many of you responded to on changes that you make to texts when editing. Many of the listeners were very interested in the Finnish aspect and on how “foreign” authors should sound in English: discussion really took off in the chat and in the Q and A session.
Book review: Handbook of Easy Languages in Europe

Alice Lehtinen copyedited this book, and Kate Sotejeff-Wilson reviewed it. Read more here:

The Helsinki Book Fair is a highlight of the year for many writers, editors, translators, and readers. Our partners FILI and SKTL will be there. This year, so will NEaT! If you want to join other NEaT members and meet up in person over lunch at the book fair on Friday, 29 October, contact Kate at kate@kswtranslations.com. Part of the programme is also online, so you don’t have to be there in person, but if you can, we hope to see you there.
