Diabetes Awareness Month

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Approximately 88 million Americans have prediabetes and unfortunately more than 84% are not aware. Prediabetes doesn’t have any symptoms, so it is even more important to get tested. Ask your doctor for an A1C test if you are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

You are at increased risk if:
  • Overweight
  • 45 years or older
  • Have a parent, brother, or sister with type 2 diabetes
  • Physically active less than 3 times a week
  • Ever had gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) or gave birth to a baby who weighed more than 9 pounds
  • Have polycystic ovary syndrome
Race and ethnicity are also factors: African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, American Indians, Pacific Islanders, and some Asian Americans are at higher risk.
There are lots of lifestyle changes you can make to prevent or delay developing type 2 diabetes. Please call to make an appt today!

November Spotlight

Because it is Diabetes Awareness month, November Spotlight is bright on our Registered Dietician Joanna Kriehn. Joanna works in two different departments at Mercy Hospital; Primary care with diabetes prevention and under Mercy Sports Medicine. For MSM she supports athletes of all kind from weekend warriors to Fort Lewis Student Athletes. ". I help individuals make the healthiest food choices possible given their unique circumstances. One counseling session may involve helping a student athlete meet their macro and micronutrient needs while working within the confines of a food allergy. Another session may involve helping an athlete find creative ways to fuel themselves before and after workouts to avoid stomach upset". Joanna brings over 20 years of experience as a nutrition professional to the table with each client and prepared to help each individual about their unique health needs and goals.

When talking to Joanna, she discussed why she decided to go into nutrition education. "I find it very fulfilling to help people improve their health in addition to improving their performance. Basically, I like helping people and can’t imagine working outside of healthcare. The field is very interesting to me and nutrition research is always evolving, which means I am always learning something new!
Plus, food is deeply personal which adds a layer of complexity to every situation. Even if I know the research, finding ways to encourage my clients to leave behind old habits and try something new is a fun challenge. At the end of the day, I encourage everyone I work with to listen to the experts though rely on their own wisdom when it comes to fueling their body."

Joanna enjoys meeting new clients and helping a variety of populations. If you have different goals for your nutrition. See the link below to schedule an appointment with Joanna.
