ROW convenes community partners to enhance the quality of life through innovation, analysis, cultural advancement and investment along Indy waterways and in neighborhoods.

Celebrating 10 Years at ROWPort

Dark clouds turned to blue skies on October 8 at ROWPort 2021: Reflecting on 10 Years of the Collective. Community members, organizational partners, and financial supporters convened for our annual celebration of waterways at Belmont Beach.
At check-in, ROWPort-goers received a commemorative ROW umbrella with a stormwater message and were prompted to visit ten different stations placed around Belmont Beach. Three stations centered around input on ROW's future strategic plan and six stations represented each of ROW's waterway committees, informing attendees of the waterway committee's respective accomplishments over the past year and vision for the next year and decade to come. The White River Vision Plan hosted historian Jordan Ryan to engage in conversations about the river.
Steering Committee Co-Chairs Rhonda Harper of Citizens Energy Group and Mo McReynolds with the City of Indianapolis Office of Sustainability, lead a short, formal recognition of ROW's efforts.

With October 2021 marking a ten-year milestone in ROW's efforts, a special thank you was extended to the visionary Founders -- those who first came together 10 years ago and imagined reconnecting to our waterways as a avenue for connecting art, good design, and nature in Indianapolis. Founders present included Anthony Bridgeman, Ashlee Mras, Brad Beaubien, David Forsell, LaShawnda Crowe Storm, Mark Adler, Mark Keisling, Michael Kaufmann, and Tedd Grain. To mark the occasion, they were presented with a commemorative plaque created by Pleasant Run clay artist Jude Odell. Additionally, funders, Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, Cummins, Herbert Simon Family Foundation, and NuGensis were recognized for their continued support of ROW and waterway projects.

The rest of the day's festivities encouraged attendees to experience the fun at their own pace. Guests were entertained by poetry readings from Reflections on Little Eagle Creek poetry anthology; enjoyed hot sandwiches and fries from Vee's Sandwich Shopcold beer from Centerpoint Brewing, and cider from Ash & Elm. Friends of Belmont Beach hosted several activities, including Tedd Hardy Presents leading a free throw contest and a DJ providing music.

A special thank you to our Waterways and Steering Committee volunteers planning and staffing our event stations, to Indy Convergence for programming the event, and to community members of the Belmont Beach Project for welcoming us into your space and celebrating a decade of efforts with us! Here's to the next 10 years!

ROW Seeks Your Input on New Strategic Plan

For the last decade, ROW has worked purposefully to convene community partners to enhance the quality of life of Indianapolis’ waterways and neighborhoods through innovation, analysis, cultural advancement, and investment. As we look forward to the next decade of fulfilling this mission ROW's Strategic Planning Subcommittee is seeking the community’s input to help us update our strategic plan.
While most refer to us as ‘ROW’, each of the four words that make up our name, Reconnecting-to-Our-Waterways, are important. At this year’s ROWPort, we challenged attendees to think about which of the four words are most important to them. Is there a word that most resonates with you? You can submit a 30-second video clip explaining why to add to the wall of videos and inform our planning.
In addition we want to understand what activities are important to you. Since 2011 the ROW Collective has: funded over $24 million in projects and programs along our waterways, restored nearly 160 acres of habitat along our waterways, and created 142 installations in waterway communities, including sculptures, trails, and signs all while engaging hundreds of volunteers across the City of Indianapolis. Follow this link to share what you think the Collective should activate over the next 10 years.
Lastly, as a Collective, the many people who bring different skills and resources to ROW are the very people who activate the visions of the Collective. The Subcommittee wants to better understand not only who is at our table but what brings you to the table and what you want to take away from the table. Take the survey and share what you want the ROW Collective to accomplish and what and who you can bring to our collective table.

ITKWR: Tree Talk! is being organized by ROW with expert assistance from Keep Indianapolis Beautiful’s Iasia Cheers, Hillary Cox, and Alejandro Espinosa de los Monteros, and Indiana Forest Alliance’s Rae Schnapp. ITKWR is made possible with funding from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust.
