Welcome to the October issue of Mizzou Grad & Postdoc News.
We hope you took advantage of some of the great activities during Graduate Education Week and National Postdoc Appreciation Week. As with many of the sessions from these celebratory weeks, below I am sharing some opportunities that might help you as you prepare for your lives at and after Mizzou.
Did you know that in addition to the Graduate School’s one-credit courses, Preparing Future Faculty and Preparing Future Professionals, we offer a Certificate in Public Engagement? This certificate is designed to prepare students to communicate their scholarship with a variety of audiences and to demonstrate the broader impacts of scholarship. As you think about your career trajectory, these courses can be extremely valuable.
Last week, all graduate and professional students should have received an email inviting you to participate in our annual Graduate and Professional Student Experience Survey. We constructed the survey with input from the Graduate Professional Council and Student Affairs. I encourage you to complete the survey, as your input is invaluable to the Graduate School so that we can provide professional development opportunities to meet your needs and to advocate for resources that will enhance your success. The responses are also critical for your programs so that they can make data-informed decisions to support graduate and professional students throughout your time at Mizzou. Information on how to access the survey is available in the Survey & Data section below. Last year’s results are available on the Graduate School website.

You matter and are making a difference—this is a message that you may not hear often enough, but I want to reinforce it. The Graduate School and the Office of Postdoctoral Education are here to advocate for you; please do not hesitate to reach out to us so that we can best support you while at Mizzou.

Maya Williams
Maya Williams, a 3rd-year doctoral student in Counseling Psychology, and recent recipient of the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Doctoral Fellowship from the American Psychological Association, shares her educational journey, including finding and developing her research focus through undergraduate and graduate studies, her personal and professional support systems, and how the Fellowship will support her as she continues on the path towards her Ph.D. in 2023. December Graduates: Please familiarize yourself with the dates and deadlines listed at the Graduation Checklist. For quicker processing and feedback, please submit thesis and dissertation materials by December 3.
Thesis and dissertation materials will not be accepted after December 10.
If you are no longer planning to graduate in Fall 2021, please notify our office so that we can update our records.
Fall 2021 Commencement: The Graduate School Commencement Ceremony will be held on Friday, December 17 at 7:30 PM in the Hearnes Center. If you are receiving a graduate DEGREE and plan to participate in the Graduate School ceremony, please register by December 3.
Spring and Summer Graduates: The Spring and Summer Application for Graduation opens next week on October 27.

Mizzou 18
Applications for Mizzou 18 are opening soon!
In the spirit of service, first modeled by the University's founding families in 1839, the Mizzou Alumni Association Student Board presents the Mizzou 18 Award. This award is dedicated to honoring 18 University of Missouri graduate and professional students in the last year of their degree eligibility.
Chosen for their world-class research, collaboration with faculty and staff, and their demonstrated leadership with undergraduate students, the honorees represent a variety of majors, activities and organizations from across campus. Each recipient also chooses a faculty or staff member to be recognized for the impact they have made in the lives of MU students.
Applications open in early November and will close at the end of November. Visit the Alumni Association’s website to learn more about the awards and past recipients!

Graduate School Travel Scholarships - Deadline Extended
The fall deadline for MU Graduate School Travel Scholarships has been extended to 11:59 PM on October 25, 2021. Apply for a Professional Presentation Travel Scholarship (up to $400), Dissertation Research Travel Scholarship (up to $400), or a John D. Bies International Travel Award (up to $4,000). A note that the Bies International Travel Award was previously awarded exclusively to doctoral candidates, however, Ph.D. students at any stage are now welcome to apply.

MU Graduate Assistantship: Science Coordinator, Missouri Local Science Engagement Network
This graduate assistantship (0.25FTE or 0.5FTE) will provide program support to the Missouri Local Science Engagement Network (LSEN). The Missouri LSEN, based at the University of Missouri Graduate School, is a partnership between MOST Policy Initiative and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) that equips scientists and science enthusiasts to engage with decision-makers in Missouri. The person in this position will support evidence-based state and local policymaking in Missouri by finding and facilitating opportunities to elevate the role of science in policy conversations. We are looking for someone who is able to start this academic year (2021-22). This stipend for this position at 0.5FTE will be $25,000 for nine months ($12,500 for 0.25FTE), prorated based on the start date.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science is now accepting applications for the 2021 Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program Solicitation 2. Applications are due 5:00 PM Eastern Time on November 10, 2021.
The SCGSR program provides supplemental funds for Ph.D. candidates to conduct part of their thesis research at a host DOE laboratory/facility in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist within a defined award period. Collaborating DOE Laboratory Scientists may be from any of the participating DOE national laboratories/facilities. The award period for the proposed research project at DOE laboratories/facilities may range from 3 to 12 consecutive months.

Charlotte W. Newcombe Fellowship
The Newcombe Fellowship supports the final year of work on Ph.D. dissertations dealing with ethical or religious values in fields across the humanities and social sciences.Deadline: November 15, 2021
Higher Education Media Fellowship
The Higher Education Media Fellowship increases the number of journalists with the tools and networks to provide richer and more comprehensive coverage of postsecondary education, particularly career and technical education.

IAS Fellowships for Postdoctoral Scholars
The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) is seeking applicants for Social Science, Natural Sciences (variable deadlines), and Mathematics postdoctoral fellowships. Applicants must be current postdoctoral scholars or have received their doctorate by the time of the application deadline. Generally, these fellowships fund full-time salaries of postdoctoral scholars to conduct independent research and participate in IAS seminars.

Mahindra Humanities Postdoctoral Fellowships
The Mahindra Humanities Center at Harvard invites applications for one-year postdoctoral fellowships on the topic of the environmental humanities, drawn from any humanistic discipline. Topics may include (but are not limited to) climate change, biodiversity, social justice, environmental justice, food justice, regenerative practices, gardening, landscape, urban foraging, health, and animal studies. Doctoral candidates and postdocs are eligible.
Deadline: November 12, 2021
Boren Fellowships
Boren Fellowships provide U.S. citizen graduate students at the master’s and the doctoral level with funds to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East) in exchange for their commitment to seek work in the federal government. Applicants can be from any academic field but should be interested in studying less commonly taught languages.

Cybersecurity Brunch N' Learn Sessions
Researchers face unique challenges when it comes to data security, but Mizzou is dedicated to helping you keep your valuable research data secure. In recognition of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, The Office of Research and Economic Development's Research Support Services invites you to join their Brunch n’ Learn sessions for tips and tricks on keeping your data safe.
The Brunch n’ Learn sessions are from 10 – 11 AM each Wednesday in October. Upcoming sessions are:

2022 Humanities Without Walls Career Diversity Workshop: Call for Applications
In summer 2022, the University of Michigan’s Institute for the Humanities will host Humanities Without Walls annual summer workshop for doctoral students interested in learning about diverse careers for humanists. Ann Arbor, Michigan will serve as the primary location for workshop activities. Applications are due November 1, 2021
Calling scientists and engineers interested in policy writing experience!
MOST is seeking members of a Community Science Note Editorial Board who can assist in writing and reviewing science notes for a variety of settings, including general information, responses to public comment opportunities, and in advance of public hearings. They request that writers and editors have scientific training such as advanced degrees and/or extensive research experience. Open to Graduate Students and Postdocs. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will be hosting a virtual seminar on program funding and grants administration. If you are a university administrator, researcher, early-stage investigator, or graduate student, NIH encourages you to attend this seminar. Due to the migration to One Canvas, all previously enrolled students were dropped from the page. Use the self-enrollment link to re-enroll, or enroll for the first time. November is National Native American Heritage Month
According to the Native American Heritage Month website:
“One of the very proponents of an American Indian Day was Dr. Arthur C. Parker, a Seneca Indian, who was the director of the Museum of Arts and Science in Rochester, N.Y. He persuaded the Boy Scouts of America to set aside a day for the “First Americans” and for three years they adopted such a day. In 1915, the annual Congress of the American Indian Association meeting in Lawrence, Kans., formally approved a plan concerning American Indian Day. It directed its president, Rev. Sherman Coolidge, an Arapahoe, to call upon the country to observe such a day. Coolidge issued a proclamation on Sept. 28, 1915, which declared the second Saturday of each May as an American Indian Day and contained the first formal appeal for recognition of Indians as citizens. . . . In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Similar proclamations, under variants on the name (including “Native American Heritage Month” and “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month”), have been issued each year since 1994.”

The First-Generation working group is gearing up for a celebration the week of November 8, 2021. Events will be available in MU Engage with a tag "FirstGenMizzou". The working group purchased "I'm First" buttons and sticker that will be available to all first-generation students, staff, and faculty. They will be available at the Student Success Center, the Center for Student Involvement, or any of Mizzou's Five Social Justice Centers!
