MFA APPLICATIONS OPEN NOV 15

The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program in the Department of Art is a full-time, fully-funded three-year degree program that develops a professional artistic practice in the setting of a vibrant research university environment, exploring the significance of creating art in the here and now. The interdisciplinary program is highly competitive (each cohort is typically 6-8 students), so we encourage you to start working on your application, portfolio, and recommendations early. Applications open November 15, 2021 with a submission deadline of January 8, 2022. More info here.

  • Clarence Morgan solo show at Burnet Gallery (Wayzata) - Opening Reception OCT 23 3:00-7:00 PM
    Burnet Gallery is proud to present Linear Fictions, a selection of drawings by Professor Clarence Morgan created in 2020. The drawings in Linear Fictions “…were made in an extended moment of uncertainty, when a five-day trip became a seven-month stay when an expansive archive-like studio space became a smaller self-crafted drawing board on a dressing table.” Join Clarence for an opening reception on Saturday, October 23rd, 3:00-7:00 PM.   • Chris Larson video installation on view at BIENALSUR (Saudi Arabia)
    Associate Professor Chris Larson has a new video-installation included in BIENALSUR, the International Biennial of Contemporary Art of the South. Larson's work is featured in Echoes. A World between the Analogue and the Virtual on view from November 30 - December 30, 2021. The exhibition is made possible with support from the Ministry of Culture of Saudi Arabia.   • Clarence Morgan featured in a new exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA)
    Professor Clarence Morgan currently has work featured in The Contemporary Print: 20 Years at Highpoint Editions on view at MIA now through January 9, 2022. The exhibition showcases 175 artworks in a broad range of printmaking techniques, styles, and subjects. You’ll also find preliminary drawings and working proofs, as well as demonstrations to better appreciate this expressive art form. Learn more about the show here.

  • Call for Midwest BIPOC Filmmakers - Fire Light Media - DUE OCT 29
    Firelight Media invites emerging filmmakers living in the American Midwest who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color (BIPOC) to submit proposals or works-in-progress for a new digital shorts initiative series, HOMEGROWN: Future Visions. Eight emerging BIPOC filmmakers in the American Midwest will receive $35,000 to produce an 8-10 minute non-fiction short film. Learn more and apply here.

     
  • Call for Artists-in-Residence - U of M Dept of Chicano & Latino Studies - DUE OCT 31
    The Chicano and Latino Studies Department invites applications for our next resident artist for a portion of the 2021-2022 academic year. The chosen artist will receive a stipend of $6,000 to incubate or generate new work in any media or genre of the creative arts. We are interested in artists who can enrich our academic and local community and demonstrate an ability to interact with and inspire students. We invite artists who are willing to forge relationships through programming, their creative work, and/or process. Preference will be given to Minnesota and neighboring Midwestern states. Learn more and apply here.

     
  • Teaching Artists-in-Residence - University of California Davis - DUE NOV 5
    The Department of Art and Art History at the University of California Davis is pleased to invite applications for two Teaching Artists-in-Residence in The California Studio. We are looking for artists in all disciplines, traditional and non-traditional, who are passionate about their research and eager to incorporate the vast resources of the university and the Northern California region into the classroom. Visiting artists will teach an upper-division art studio class and a graduate seminar, deliver a public lecture and further their creative work and/or research while on campus.   • Call for Proposals - "This Is My Home" at the National Liberty Museum - DUE NOV 21 
    The National Liberty Museum (NLM) is excited to announce This is My Home, opening Friday, June 3, 2022. Five artists will be selected from a two-step call-to-artist and in-house jury selection process. This exhibition will provide artists their own space within a gallery to create a site-specific installation inside a constructed “home.” Individual artists, collaborative groups, and creative organizations are encouraged to apply, and all mediums are welcome. Donald R. Torbert Lecture in Architectural History
Thursday, October 21, 5:00 PM in Willey Hall Rm 125

Dr. Jesús Escobar (Department of Art History, Northwestern University) will present his lecture entitled “Mariana’s Madrid: Architecture, Ceremony, and Power.” In order to ensure social distancing, the in-person lecture is restricted to UMN faculty, staff, and students only. There is also an option to attend the lecture virtually via Zoom.
