This Friday October 22nd, join a conversation with Amber Heidbrink about "A Framework for understanding Faculty conceptions of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion".

When we hear the word diversity, what comes to mind? With increasing calls for equity and inclusion in science, diversity seems to be at the forefront of national conversations. The classroom is one space where we communicate our values and invite students into the scholarship of our disciplines. In this session, we will discuss the different ways in which diversity can be conceptualized in the classroom. Together, we will examine the features and variations that make up these different conceptions and reflect on approaches to create more equitable and inclusive spaces. This workshop will provide instructors with background information to broaden their understanding of diversity and apply this understanding to their work. We will collectively think about our own identities and conceptions of diversity. Together we will read excerpts from interviews on how faculty conceptualize diversity and identify any themes, similarities, or differences in the data. We will discuss these interview excerpts in small groups, followed by a large group discussion of the different conceptions of diversity. Additionally, we will reflect on how these conceptions of diversity may inform the way we interact with and support students from diverse backgrounds in our academic work and professional lives.
