YEAR 12 FINAL ASSEMBLY – 21 OCTOBER 2021
|
|
Today we honoured our 223 Year 12 students. 223 fine young men and women who are soon to be Sacred Heart graduates – our wonderful Class of 2021.
I have been truly inspired reading 223 Year 12 Sacred Heart student references and statements of results. The individual and collective achievements of this group are as good as I have ever seen in in any graduating group anywhere. The results of these students and the sum of their achievements across our Four Pillars during the last six years would be the envy of any school in the world.
And more importantly they are humble, courageous, and compassionate.
Today I thanked them, on behalf of all of us who were present; all of the previous 50 plus graduating classes and the many classes to come. This group has added their own verse to the great story that is our College. They have truly set the bar high for all who will follow their example in the future.
In any one’s life this is a memorable day. I imagine that many of our Year 12s today are feeling a little unsure about which roads to take and where they might lead. Leaving your high school is a rite of passage on every hero’s journey. It is the moment when the world expects you to be an adult and to take responsibility for your own destiny.
My encouragement to the students in our Class of 2021 is to keep believing in yourselves as we have believed in you. Keep being proud of yourselves as we have been proud of you. Be happy with how far you have come - and have faith in how far you will go, as we all do, your parents, all the staff, your class teachers, your PCG teachers and your Assistant Deputy Principals.
Thank you to all our Captains, Year, House, and portfolio Captains, who have carried out their duties superbly this year and have all led from the front. I particularly thank your elected leaders; Ash Elphick, Head Boy and Olivia De Longis, Head Girl. Good leaders know the way and show the way. Good leaders strive to represent the best values of the community and Ash and Olivia have done this. They have been respectful, courageous, and compassionate. They have learned along the way - and they have been authentic.
I want to also acknowledge and pay my total respect and admiration to Mrs Sandra Manning and the PCG teachers who have cared for these students in the past two years in the shadow of the pandemic. These people will miss our Year 12s, precisely because they have invested so much in them. They have never shirked from their noble responsibility to challenge each student to be the best they could be.
Many of our students have carried burdens into school every day and yet have persisted. Life is full of bumpy roads but bumpy roads lead to beautiful destinations. I salute all who have quietly overcome more than most. Your story is sacred ground. Well done!
For all our Year 12s, high school days are over and done now. For better or for worse. None of us can change our past, but each of us can create our future. There is always another day. All of us should put our hopes and dreams out in front of us and walk in the direction of our dreams. But our dreams don’t work unless we do.
I hope each of our graduate’s futures is full of health and happiness and fulfilment. I hope they carry the flame of Sacred Heart and always be light for others.
And as they always strive upwards, they will always be a 'Heart for Life'.
I commend our Year 12 students to the whole community for being terrific role models, fine examples of good Christian young men and women, destined to make the world a better place.
Mr Peter Bothe
Principal

YEAR 12 CLASS OF 2021
The Class of 2021 has been simply "inspirational"! Many students have faced significant challenges and demonstrated outstanding improvement, growth and achievement. The College is proud of ALL of our students and we thank and congratulate them for their contribution. I urge them to remember the words of Michelle Obama - “Success isn’t about how much money you make; it’s about the difference you make in people’s lives.” Hopefully, the exposure of our students to the charism of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions has prepared them well to live ‘successful lives’.
I wish all students the very best for the future!

STUDENTS VOLUNTEER AT TELETHON
|
|
Last weekend, two students and two Alumni were spotted at Telethon.
Scott Guerini (Year 10) continued to amaze with Scott's Great Walk for Telethon by once again taking on the 50km Treadmill Challenge. For the last couple of years, Scott has set himself the challenge of completing a bonus round where he needs to walk an extra 50km the next day. Scott completed this bonus challenge once again this year, bringing his total walking distance to 100km!
Thanks to the generous support of the community around Scott, he has now reached $200,000 raised for Telethon since 2010! Scott said: “This is an absolutely incredible moment for me, for the community who supports me and for the sick kids and babies this money has helped. I’ve had so many people dig deep and help me every year and this year when you heard how close I was to reaching that $200,000 milestone you dug even deeper. Words can’t really describe how much your support means to me. I hope you know how much your continued support means to me and the the sick kids and babies of WA”.
Thanks to the awesome SHC support crew who came along to cheer Scott on at the 20km mark on Sunday.
Also spotted volunteering their time for Telethon over the weekend were Angelina Curtis (Year 8 Normandy), who captivated audiences with her vocal talents on stage at the Family Fun Carnival and Morgan Knox-Lee (Class of 2018) and Julian Vicentini (Class of 2016), who hosted Telethon in the early hours of the morning in their brand new Telethon Pyjamas as part of their Broadcasting studies.
Congratulations to all of these students and the many in our community who volunteer.

TOURNAMENT OF MINDS INTERNATIONAL FINALS
|
|
Last Saturday, the College had 23 students and five teachers (Mrs Marcella Guerrero, Mrs Jenny Baker, Mrs Sharmaine Lee Fong, Mrs Sam Thompson and Miss Sophie Brouwer) involved in the Tournament of Minds International Final at Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Joondalup.
It was a final with a difference as all the state's solutions were videoed and judged the next day by a team of judges from across Australia. We then tuned in on Zoom the next afternoon to hear the final results. Sacred Heart College won both THE ARTS and SOCIAL SCIENCE National Finals! Congratulations to all three teams who did an amazing job. We all felt very proud of you!
|
|
Special thanks to the teachers named above who gave up 12 hours of their Saturday to support their team and to Samson Wheeler (Year 11 Trinity) and Olek Tindall (Year 11 Barlow) who attended and encouraged the STEM team. Thanks also to our wonderful parents who brought their families along to watch the presentations.

In Term 3, Sacred Heart College launched a Drone Club and invited students to come along to learn the rules of flying drones before having the opportunity to fly them.
We have been flying a Tello which is a really small drone (85g) and this week we got to fly the DJI Mavic Air 2. It's much more stable and goes faster. We did have to move location because the magpies have a nest nearby and have been know to swoop the drone, but once we moved away, we were back flying again.
If any students want to join, please email Mrs Burnett. We usually meet in ME3 on Tuesdays at lunch.

SACRED HEART NETBALL CLUB
|
|
The Sacred Heart Netball Club is run by volunteers and each year we have at least 15 teams playing competitions on Saturdays for Winter Netball. That equates to roughly 140+ players with their coaches and managers that need the support of the Committee and College staff. We have a number of people, including ourselves, retiring from the committee at the end of the Spring season and more volunteers are needed to fill the positions below for next year. Please consider volunteering for the open positions below and let us know (shcnetball@outlook.com) by Friday 5 November so we can plan a successful handover.
Basically, without enough volunteers the club can’t operate. Thanks for your consideration.
