Men & Masculinities Programme in Herefordshire & Worcestershire now open for referrals

The programme is designed to deepen men’s understanding of themselves and their relationships. It is free and accessible for any men who are aware that their relationships have become distressing and damaged by their abusive behaviour, violence or issues of coercive control. The programme creates a safe and supportive space for participants to explore the impact of gender socialisation on their relationships, their experiences of parenting and self-care and self-esteem.

The programme will work with a range of clients including those that have substance misuse and or mental health issues. The programme also offers a linked (ex-) partner support service upon referral, provided by West Mercia Women’s Aid.

The programme has an open referral process so we can accept referrals from any professional and men are also able to self-refer. We will complete suitability assessments on all referrals and if accepted they will be invited to join the 24 week rolling programme. We are aiming for the first group delivery to commence in early October 2021.

Herefordshire Suicide Prevention Strategy

The impact of suicide and suicidal behaviour on the person, their families, friends and communities is significant and long lasting, yet potentially preventable.

Herefordshire and Worcestershire have, in conjunction, produced a strategy and work plan which represents a collective desire across key stakeholders to reduce the number of suicides across West Mercia.

New Report on Safeguarding Children under 1 from Non-Accidental Injury by Male Carers

The Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel has published a report following a review of non-accidental injury to babies caused by male carers. The recommendations include important messages for practitioners to engage with and involve fathers and other men who are caring for a child, so that they are better able to cope with the stresses of caring for a baby, understand the extreme vulnerability of babies and to never shake a baby. The report found that the role that men played in the child’s life and their own experiences were frequently overlooked by services. Anger and a low tolerance of frustration were key characteristics of the men and the injuries were often responses to triggers like crying or vomiting, that are normal behaviours of babies.

Our briefing paper summarises the key messages for practitioners and identifies useful resources. The Presentation provides a full summary of the report. We encourage all professionals to disseminate this information widely among your networks and with colleagues.

The full report is available here.
