Haunted houseplants

Indoors you’ll find our wonderful selection of houseplants. The range is a bit different every week, but here are just a few that you may find, highlighted here for having a bit of a ‘spooky’ side.

Devil’s ivy - another plant with a Halloween-perfect name, this is an easy to grow trailing (or climbing) plant with heart-shaped leaves.
Dieffenbachia - a striking variegated plant also known as ‘dumb cane’ because chewing on the stem can cause temporary speechlessness (don't try this at home).
Carnivorous plants - these include the Venus fly trap (Dionaea) and 'monkey jars' (Nepenthes), both of which trap and digest insects.

Pay us a visit to discover more weird and wonderful plants for your indoor space!

Hellebores - never a bore!

As the days grow shorter, Riverside’s hellebores begin to make their appearance. These stars of the winter and early spring garden include Helleborus orientalis (or the Lenten rose), Helleborus niger (the Christmas or winter rose) and Helleborus foetidus (the enticingly named ‘stinking hellebore'). We also stock modern hybrids that have been bred for distinctive features such as marbled foliage and more upright flowers. Come and see us to find your favourite!

Witch hazel casts its spell

Another plant helping to light up the darker months of the year is the bewitching witch hazel. The leaves of this large deciduous shrub take on warm hues in the autumn before they drop, leaving bare branches upon which delicate spidery flowers appear in winter. We stock a number of different varieties, including the very popular and beautifully scented ‘Pallida’ and ‘Arnold Promise’. We also have many other deciduous shrubs and trees with striking autumn colours, including Cornus, Berberis, Prunus and our collection of Acers (Japanese maples).

Happy to help.
