On September 18th, Journey of the Universe co-author Mary Evelyn Tucker partnered with Orion Magazine and the Yale School of the Environment to moderate the webinar, “Celebrating Old Growth: A Conversation with Robin Wall Kimmerer, Robert Macfarlane, and David Haskell.” With over 9,000 registrants, the panel celebrated the August release of Old Growth, an anthology of essays and poems about the lives of trees. Watch the recording of the event here. You can read Mary Evelyn's opening comments here, and you can find an article on the event by Jess Jones here.
During the conversation, award-winning author Robin Wall Kimmerer reflected on how an Indigenous approach to education informs her teaching. For Kimmerer, “That notion that we are the teachers has to be dispensed with...it’s the land that’s the teacher...The moment when students drink a cup of white pine tea or eat a wild strawberry...I know they are changed.”
Workshop on Education in the Context of
the Universe Story
How can young people get a taste for the living Earth? How can they re-member their place in a more-than-human world?
These questions inspired a gathering of educators on October 11-13 on ancestral Mohican land in Salisbury, CT. Drawing from Journey and the Deeptime Network, these teachers are reimagining adolescent education in the context of a universe story. Their hope is that an integral approach to education can animate learning and orient younger generations to the Great Work of our time. Those participating included:
Kyle Herman, Teacher and Academic Advisor, Community Montessori Public Charter School
Dr. Missy Lahren, Environmental Lawyer
Jana Morgan Herman, Montessori Instructor, Consultant, Mentor
Ari Makridakis, Cosmology Teacher, doctoral student at the California Institute of Integral Studies
Sam King, Educational Outreach Coordinator of the Journey of the Universe Project
Lisa Sheble, former Teacher of Philosophy and Religion at the Salisbury School

Journey of the Universe: Assessing the Contributions of
Pierre Teilhard De Chardin and Thomas Berry
On September 18th, John Grim and Sam King traveled to ancestral Potatuck land in Litchfield, CT to offer a conference on “Journey of the Universe: Assessing the Contributions of Pierre Teilhard De Chardin and Thomas Berry.” The conference began with a film screening followed by a discussion of relevant ideas from Teilhard such as cosmogenesis, zest for life, and the noosphere. Participants then considered the enduring legacy of Berry in his vision of the New Story, the universe as a “communion of subjects,” and the Great Work. The conference concluded with discussions of how a Journey worldview shifts as we navigate climate emergencies, environmental changes, and social, environmental, and ecological issues of justice.
