Updates from our team

Ethnic Community Groups Develop Sexual Harm Prevention Projects
The Shama Prevention team have been busy delivering sexual violence prevention workshops across Aotearoa. Our team was able to facilitate in-person sessions in Wellington with Mituakiri and Christchurch with the Women2Women ethnic women’s network. We also facilitated an online multi-session workshop with ALAC, with staff members attending from Invercargill, Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton. These groups are all now working on exciting new prevention projects for their communities, and we expect to be able to share new resources from their hard work very soon!

Mituakiri is producing animated videos in Spanish focusing on consent and healthy relationships and is based on feedback from the Latin American communities in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Women2Women are working on two projects. The first group is developing a campaign about helpful tips for parents to protect their children from child sexual abuse from community leaders. A community workshop will be held next year so watch this space.

The second group is focusing on social media and safety for ethnic teenagers, offering options and ideas around responding on social media, and linking into outside resources such as NetSafe.

ALAC are currently developing their project plan, and expect to focus on promoting healthy relationship behaviours for adults.

Juanita Rojas, Prevention lead, says “It’s been exciting watching different groups develop their plans.  We want to acknowledge the hard work of the people participating in the initiatives. We are very impressed with their commitment to building safety and connection inside their communities. We are looking forward to the final results.”

The Shama Prevention team aims to deliver the Let’s Talk About Child Safety workshops with parents from refugee communities in partnership with Red Cross in Palmerston North this year. These workshops have been delayed due to the recent Delta outbreak; because they are delivered using interpreters, they are not really suitable for online delivery.  We look forward to this work with parents – our evaluation results from these workshops so far show ethnic parents are enjoying the chance to share and learn skills and ideas about keeping their children safe.

Shama Embarks in New Research - Enabling Housing for Ethnic Women

Shama feels called to make a positive impact within the housing sector that will result in better housing and living outcomes for ethnic women. As such, we will embark on a feasibility study to identify the barriers, enablers and solutions that have a good chance of rapid success, that can be scaled, and that address the most pressing and urgent needs of ethnic women.
The hypothesis is that the current housing development process, end product of housing design and neighbourhood layout, and the current options for renting and buying does not best suit the needs, aspirations, and skills of women and ethnic women.
The hypothesis is also that if women and ethnic women are included from the inception of housing, at the design level, as co-design participants and professionals, that the resulting housing developments will better reflect the needs, culture, aspirations, and skills of women and ethnic women.  We are inviting women to participate in sharing their housing aspirations, what are the challenges experienced to being able to create or live in housing that is in alignment with those aspirations, and exploring what could enable achieving better housing for and by women and their families.
We are looking for women (especially ethnic) to participate in this research through filling in a survey and then having discussions (live or by Zoom) to go deeper into understanding.
Participant Criteria:
•    Living in the Waikato
•    Do not currently own their own home
•    Feel constrained in being able to achieve their housing aspirations
•    Be in a part-time or full-time employment or owning their own business (earning some income)
If you fulfil the above criteria, please fill in the form below as an expression of interest to participate in this research project. Personal details will be kept confidential.
Zola Rose is the lead researcher for this study. If you want more information please call Zola on 027-449-0422 or email zola@commonground.net.nz
