Kia ora December!

International Volunteer Day is Sunday 5th December - how will you celebrate your volunteers?

Tēnā koutou <<First Name>>

The December edition is a little early this month to ensure you get the important information in time.  This edition includes updates, training, webinars and resources on COVID-19 in general and the move to the Protection Framework (traffic light system and vaccination certificates). There are also resources for having difficult conversations, training and events, as well as news from outside of the region.

Sunday the 5th of December is International Volunteer Day. How are you celebrating?  We would love to see photos and do a social media post of how you celebrated!   Resources are available here (see below for more information).

Volunteer Nelson will be closing for the holiday break from Monday 27th December and reopening Monday 17th January.  The next edition of this newsletter will be in February 2022.

For those of you taking a well-earned break, I wish you fun with family and friends, and that you can come back to your role with renewed energy in what looks to be another challenging year. I hope you enjoy reading the final edition for 2021 of the Manager of Volunteers Newsletter.

One idea is to thank volunteers on their Linked In profile.  This may be a particularly valuable way to acknowlege their efforts if they are volunteering as a pathway to employment and career advancement.

For more information on how to do this, please see this video from Volaby.
International Volunteer Day is about recognising the great efforts of volunteers, but it's also a great opportunity to promote volunteering.

You probably know the benefits to volunteering, but it may be worth considering these benefits, and why volunteers may start to volunteer, but more importantly, why they may stay.  Read more

On the flip side, we often understand why people volunteer, but why don't they?  What are some of the barriers to getting involved?  Read this article from The Conversation to find out more.

Volunteers in Action Promotion - upsized!

Volunteer Nelson is looking for photos of your Volunteers in Action!  We have upgraded the promotion winners to receive Countdown vouchers. The chosen volunteer receives a $50 voucher and the organisation receives a $20 voucher. If there is more than one volunteer, the voucher can be shared between them.

The photo, along with a few words about the volunteer and the role will be used to help:
  • Acknowledge and thank the volunteer/s
  • Promote the organisations and their need for volunteers
  • Promote Volunteer Nelson and Be Collective
  • Promote volunteering to the Nelson Tasman community
Alternatively, post of your organisations Facebook page and tag Volunteer Nelson or even better, email us the post link.  Please get your volunteer photo and short blurb in by the 15th of the month. Winners will be notified via phone/email.  Send your entries to admin@volunteernelson.org.nz

Leading with young people at the helm

Ryan Hooper-Smith, outgoing Youth Board member, Volunteering New Zealand, shares some thoughts on youth and volunteering.

"As we shift from the more formalised volunteering towards casual volunteering, combined with the prominence of social media, we are seeing the idea of ‘volunteering’ change. In order to adapt, it is paramount that we have young people represented in our organisations at all levels."
