FCCA October 2021 Newsletter

Post AGM Newsletter

As you may have already heard, proceeding the 2020/2021 AGM, new board members representing the Findlay Creek Community Association (FCCA) have joined the team to create a super team. We would therefore like to take a moment to introduce your FCCA team through this newsletter.

The FCCA Board is comprised of five Executive Committee Members, as well as several Directors.

2021-22 FCCA Board Openings

Interested in volunteering in your community?

The FCCA currently has five Director positions we would love to fill for the 2021-22: Green Team, Volunteer, Government Relations, Web Guru and Social Media. If you are interested in any of these positions, please email Della Vaslet-Thompson, president of the FCCA at president@findlaycreek.org.

President's corner

We are in the middle of a transition. We kindly ask for your patience as we navigate our roles and responsibilities with an almost entirely new team. Covid has created challenges for the FCCA over the last couple years. We are happy to announce, we are well underway brainstorming and establishing community relations as well as determining what our first event will be and how we can safely put it on. Our current goal is to put together and have our annual Winterfest/Winter Carnival. We have reviewed previous surveys and community input. With this information, we have implemented a Non-Member Liaison Director, for non-FCCA community members to communicate with in order to provide you a voice. We want to hear from both FCCA members and non-members. We have also brought on a few Student Representatives to help us better understand what the Youth would like to see and do in the community.

Revamping of the FCCA (Website & Logo)

We are currently in the process of revamping the FCCA website (https://findlaycreek.ca/), to make it more valuable to our members, the community, and our community business partners. We will let you know as soon as the website is updated.

Annual FCCA Memberships

Being an FCCA member has its rewards! An annual membership can be purchased anytime online at https://findlaycreek.ca/. We are in the process of establishing all the benefits and perks that come with the annual membership. Stay tuned for more information!

Findlay Creek Community Fall Clean Up

The Green Team was pleased to put on the Fall community clean up day on Sunday October 17th (postponed from the 16th due to the heavy rainfall). Once again, we had a great turn out and ended with 12 bags of garbage. Thank you to all the volunteers, FCCA who provided the funds with support from our community and to everyone who helped clean our community!

Support Our Local Businesses!

We ask that you continue to support our local businesses! Shop local has been a staple in our community and more so since the start of Covid. Shopping local helps to keep our community thriving. If you own a local business and would like to become a community business partner, please reach out to BusinessRelations@FindlayCreek.org for more information.

Fit Findlay

With winter upon us here are some clever ways to remain active through the winter. Look for ingenious ways to incorporate exercises into things you are already doing like brushing your teeth, showering, during TV commercials, radio ads or while you are cooking.
For example:

  • squats or calf raises while brushing your teeth
  • take 2 stairs at a time or run the stairs
  • lunges down the hallway or through your kitchen
  • push ups off your counter, bed or sofa
  • 10 jumping jacks or knee raises every time you go up or down the stairs
  • Plank off your mattress or couch
  • Play music and dance

We tend to hibernate more once the temperature drops however if you bundle up go outside for a walk especially during the Christmas season to see all the lights. Don’t forget your heart and lungs are muscles and need some love. Give raking, snow shoveling, ice skating, tobogganing, skiing and snow shoeing a try.  Adding a few exercises throughout your day can really add up to a lot of reps and minutes over the course of your week.

(10 squats every time you brush your teeth = 20/day – 140 squats/week WOW!!)

Doing something is better than nothing
 😊

Have concerns? Say something!

In the past few months, the FCCA has seen an increase in reports of noise disturbances, acts of vandalism in our community at various hours of the day and especially late at night.

With the above in mind, we would like to remind residents that as per the City of Ottawa Parks and Facilities Bylaw, all parks have an 11pm curfew. We would also ask residents to report to the appropriate authorities when incidents like this occur as neighbourhood patrols are report-based:

For emergencies or to report a crime in progress, call 911
For non-emergencies, call 613-236-1222 ext. 7300
TTY service for the deaf, deafened and hard of hearing: 613-232-1123
Online Reporting bit.ly/3nCHWOT for non-emergency reports such as:

* Theft (excluding theft of passports)
* Lost Property (with a visible serial number or distinct marking such as a custom engraving)
* Mischief/Damage to Property
* Theft from Vehicle
* Traffic Complaints

* Drug Complaints
* Fraud Complaints
* Hate-Motivated Incidents
* Add information to an existing report

City of Ottawa – 311
