Week 4: Elements and Ethers. The Etherization of the Blood. Lifting matter into spirit.

This is the season of the year when I come “home.” This is the season when I was born, and I am comforted by the fading of the outer light, the growth of the inner light.
No longer must I shield myself from the intense summer sense, or endure the long, hot days. We have also, hopefully, left the devastating fires of California summers behind us, with the advent of the healing rains.
Now, as the nights grow longer, it is easier to do my inner work, my studies.
Now we are leaving the 4-week feast days of Michaelmas behind us, the season dedicated to the powerful archangel who stands as an inspiration for courage and strength as we face both the metaphorical and the literal darkness of winter.
The next six weeks, that take us up to autumn, are the months in which our western cultures mark the celebrations of death and dying. This is also the season known to the Celtic people as Samhain, the midway point between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice: thus, a threshold or gateway. We in the United States, and, increasingly, in other cultures, acknowledge the threshold into darkness on Halloween, in which the ghosts and specters of darkness are said to walk amongst us. On the next two days, All Souls’ and All Saints’ Days, we turn our thoughts to the remembrance of those human beings who have died, leaving their physical bodies behind to continue their existence in another realm of experience.
This season also includes the festival of Thanksgiving, which usually comes in the fall in all cultures, as a way of giving thanks for the harvest year just past. In the United States, it falls at the very end of November for us in the United States.
In this time, I muse upon the mysteries of life and death, of incarnation and excarnation. What does it mean to wear a body? What does it mean that my spiritual core, my essence, is clothed in the sheathes of matter, so I can live in this world? For through our words of praise and thanks, matter is lifted again into the light out of which it was born.
With this in mind, I find it to be a fitting time to speak about the four elements. Thus, both in my morning eurythmy webinars as well as in these evening talks, I will speak of the world of matter that we are born into and that we will die out of.

For the dark earth that cradles the seed,
For the rain that brings forth the green leaves,
For the stars that give form to the flowers,
For the warm sun that ripens the fruit,
