Over the last month we have witnessed the heartbreaking and inhumane treatment of Haitians seeking asylum at our southern border. Individuals seeking a better life—safety, food, shelter, work—have been subject to violence, hunger, and expulsion. Many of these expulsions are happening under Title 42, a part of U.S. public health code that allows the government, during public health emergencies, to restrict people from entering the country who may be a threat to the health of the nation.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Title 42 has been used to expel an overwhelming number of asylum seekers. This is happening despite leading public health officials repeatedly stating that asylum seekers are not a threat to the health and well-being of our country, and despite the fact that seeking asylum is a legal and human right.
As Christians, we are called to stand with immigrants, recognizing the dignity and respect they deserve as image-bearers of Christ. Join us in urging the Biden Administration to end the use of Title 42 today.
