Dear readers:

It seems as if there is another headline every day about the ills of social media – but as the recent Facebook outage demonstrated, could society do without social media communication now even if it wanted? We’ll examine our love-hate relationship with social media at our Oct. 26 Tech Council Innovation Network luncheon in Madison. My most recent “Inside Wisconsin” column builds on our Oct. 19 luncheon in Wauwatosa, and you can read more about our superb lineup of speakers, panelists and advisors at the Nov. 3-4 Wisconsin Early Stage Symposium.

And, yes, the Early Stage Symposium will be in-person at Monona Terrace Convention Center. Hope to see you there!

Sincerely, Tom Still
President, Wisconsin Technology Council

The University of Illinois College of Engineering, IBM and state government unveiled plans for a Discovery Accelerator Institute on the Champaign-Urbana campus, with the long-range goal of spurring breakthroughs in areas such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, accelerated materials discovery and sustainability.

It may sound like an overgrown science project to some, but it’s aimed at solving national and global problems and introducing products and technology that may find their way into the commercial world, although not necessarily overnight. It will also help students who engage in hands-on work that will better tie them to jobs and careers after graduating. Read the full column here.

From the Jan. 6 Capitol storming to screen-addicted kids, and from genocide in Myanmar to COVID misinformation, social media is being blamed for a host of society’s ills. True, overblown or a little of both? Hear our panel of experts talk about social media’s pluses and minuses. Panelists include Spencer X. Smith, founder of social media marketing firm AmpliPhi, and Karl Rohe, an associate professor of statistics at UW-Madison who works with experts in other departments on understanding polarization and civic renewal. This past year, Exact Sciences acquired Thrive Earlier Detection, the only company that has real-world data in an asymptomatic population to support the premise that we can find multiple types of cancer with a simple blood test, called a MCED. The groundbreaking results demonstrate we have the capabilities to move the needle from just 25% of cancers identified through standard of care screening to more than 50% identified with the addition of the blood test. Patients’ lives have already been impacted in meaningful ways. Read the full column here.
