Yes, Franklin is a sleepy town along Historic Bayou Teche. And, yes, there's always something new or notable in the area.
FIFOLET CANDLEMAKERS

Chad Boutte has a nose for the seasonal scents of Louisiana.

His new Fifolet Candle Makers is located in the Old Tavern Building built about 1820 behind Shadowlawn House along Historic Bayou Teche.

NEW LISTING & JULIA'S DREAM
Acclaimed southern author and dear friend Julia Reed treasured books and had long dreamed of opening a bookstore in her beloved hometown, Greenville, MS.

Julia realized Brownwater Books near the end of her life.  And of course, it was set in an historic architectural treasure downtown, the Wetherbee House.

The store also served as a retail outpost for Reed Smythe & Company, an extraordinary mostly online home & garden store (featuring works from artists and artisans around the south).

Julia operated it with her equally fabulous talented friend and partner, Keith Smythe Meacham (at right.)

She Loved Patina!
The Wetherbee house was restored to Julia's fine specifications.
You might recall she passed away a little more than a year ago, and without her vibrant voice the bookstore business ceased. Reed Smythe has continued successfully online. And just recently, Keith announced a location in an historic Nashville building.

While most of my listings are far more lofty in in scale, the Wetherbee House awaits a new buyer who shares a love for historic properties.

I am exceptionally fortunate to have enjoyed Julia's friendship and appreciate her support of my becoming a historic property realtor.

And, yes, I am thrilled to have two major historic properties under contract!

I would be honored to assist you.
My best from Bourbon,
Peter

P.S. Julia's memorial service was recently held. I share a few more memories farther below.

More Julia Memories.....
She loved hosting stylish literary soirees at Belmont Historic Inn,
...my listing which is now under contract!
Julia spearheaded the phenomenal growth of the Delta Hot Tamale Festival which attracted top authors from around the country and some of the region's most talented chefs.
WHICH BRINGS ME TO DR. JESSICA B. HARRIS...
more about Julia farther below
Jessica is a mutual friend to Julia and me.  While our paths have converged many times and over great meals, I especially looked forward to our annual cocktails and conversation at the Delta Hot Tamale Festival where Jessica was a participating author and always a wonderful raconteur.

CONGRATULATIONS JESSICA!
Jessica has been named to
Time Magazine's Hundred Most Influential People 2021 List! She's an authority on the foodways of the African Diaspora.
The Time Magazine accolade is among many she's earned including several James Beard awards culminating in their Lifetime of Achievement Award.  WOW!
Jessica's best-selling book inspired a Netflix series:
High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey From Africa to America
SHE'S MESMERIZING! ENJOY THE PREVIEW!
I'm guessing it's over 25 years ago when I first met Jessica and her lovely mother at a Hermann-Grima Food Conference where she was a featured speaker.  And it was a pleasure to bring her out to Patoutville and give her a tour of Enterprise Sugar Mill, and to introduce her to a few African American cooks.
Jessica mentions that visit in a Spring 2021 article for 64 Parishes from where this image is featured:

Cane Contemplations

Sweetening the present, remembering the past

Jessica taught me many things including expanding my awareness of the many African contributions into Louisiana's and to the cuisine of the south. She's written nearly 20 scholarly books on Africanisms in American food and their origin. Her quest for knowledge doesn't stop! Again, Congratulations Jessica!
More is More! I thoroughly enjoyed this piece Jessica wrote for Garden & Gun, June & July 2021 edition: SOUTHERN ROADS: Riding Shotgun into the Heart of Mississippi, sizing up her many annual visits.
IT WAS THROUGH JULIA REED THAT I MET HAMISH BOWLES.
They were both editors at Vogue. She was a Senior Editor and he was then Style Editor. Hamish visited my then New Orleans antique shop and later had dinner at my Creole Maisonette on Bourbon Street pictured above.

Then all of a sudden, Hamish featured my home in a Vogue Magazine, November 1993 story. It was a high honor indeed.
More recently, Hamish was named Editor in Chief of The World of Interiors Magazine, and remains Vogue's Global Editor at Large. Congratulations to Hamish!

It's a magnificent role! The World of Interiors is the BEST interior publication, and he is their 3rd editor in the 40 years the publication has existed. The magazine represents timeless design and moreover, it's interesting!
In one of the pinnacle moments of my life, the London based magazine came knocking on my door!  Well, it was Julia Reed who suggested my home as a story to their first editor and founder, the legendary Min Hogg.

In April 1996, my house was featured and Julia wrote the story!

(For that 8 page story, click HERE, then keep scrolling AND scrolling to the end. You'll also discover a few of our hijinks & hurrahs - how Julia and I met, etc..).

The World of Interiors is in such talented hands.  Further, beyond being grateful to Hamish for his featuring my home in Vogue, I especially appreciate his kind words on her passing.

Remembering Vogue’s
Julia Reed,

‘Mississippi’s Answer to Dorothy Parker'

By: Hamish Bowles
Julia's appreciation of my New Orleans courtyard and home also made it into her cookbooks. I love the real story (aka known as Not Julia Reed's Mormon Cookbook) behind the final cover shot on the right for Julia Reed's New Orleans: Food, Fun, and Field Trips for Letting the Good Times RollPaul Costello took the gorgeous photos.
So we gathered recently in Greenville - some of her closest friends and family to finally, formally say goodbye. It was over what would have been her birthday weekend.  We needed that time together.  And we were surrounded by graciousness, beauty and love.

Her dear friend artist and writer William Dunlap donated this painting "Defunct Gin and Wildlife" in honor of Judy and Clarke Reed for their tremendous contributions to the arts and culture of the Mississippi Delta and Greenville, MS.  The painting can be seen at the Greenville Arts Council located at the E.E. Bass Cultural Center on Main Street.
On Saturday, Keith's phenomenal husband,  Presidential Biographer, Jon Meacham delivered the most beautiful memories at the service inciting tears and laughter perhaps in equal measure.

We treasured especially southern meals together. Among the places we gathered is shown for a catfish lunch. Julia was there in spirit lifting us through.
A few reminders from my time with Julia

ON SANGRIA & PAELLA

So my good friends Ashley and Barbee Ponder recently hosted a Paella Party. Barbee is a  phenomenal cook, and wanting to help I offered to make Sangria.

Of course, I knew of at least one recipe I could fall back upon.
True to the recipe in spirit... Should I have measured?
Barbee pulled the guests in to help stir as directed while the rest of us sipped sangria with anticipation and enjoyed hors d'oeuvres.
It was a spectacular Paella! While the Sangria tasted delicious, I will make some adjustments for warmer weather. What a swell gathering with friends!

I LOVE COUNTRY ROADS SUPPER CLUB EVENTS
I bet I have more cousins than you!
I'm a huge fan of County Roads Magazine and their wonderful Supper Club events. And about having more cousins than you, one sure sign is that everywhere I go, I run into relatives.  At their most recent: A Felicianas-Grown Feast at Woodlawn, near St. Francisville, I happily re-connected with Natchez cousins and their wives. The blue dress wearer is an interloper who frequents these events with me.

Peter introduced my husband and I to a gorgeous property for sale on Marais Street, showed us around, and provided every resource we needed as we considered it. Not only was he so very knowledgable about the area, the particular block, the home's architecture and historic details, etcetera — his charisma, warmth and approachability led to us meeting several of the neighbors during our tour, who were generous and helpful.

Sidenote:
We subscribe to Peter's real estate newsletter full of breathtaking historic homes throughout the region and it's a real treat.  ~
