Loreto Highlights Update - 22nd October 2021
Mission Day
Leading up to Mission Day our year 6 pupils held a service in chapel informing our Year 5 & 6 pupils about the missionaries across the world.
We could not hold our normal Mission Day festivities last year, however this year was amazing.  Year 6 have worked with their staff Heads of House to produce all the stalls activities and posters.  We started with our youngest pupils at 09.30am, followed by our Lower and Upper Primary pupils.  Our Head Girl and Boy wrote personal letters to parents regarding this year's Mission, to support Sr. Patricia's Loreto in Peru and Sr. Maria's Loreto in Sudan.
Year 3 & 4 Chapel
Year 3 and 4 gathered in chapel where Year 4 led the prayers.  This week we prayed for all missionaries working across all continents.
The Sewing Squadron
This week the pupils have started their health & safety training on how to use a Iron and Sewing Machine safely.  The pupils are to then demonstrate the safe practice when using the equipment.  We would like to thank the Friends of Loreto for purchasing the Sewing Machines for the pupils.
Carmelite Nuns
We received a consignment of really delicious cakes to sell in aid of the Carmelite nuns in Ronda. The sisters baked the cakes and Monsignor Charlie Azzopardi collected and delivered them to Loreto on Thursday morning. By this morning (Friday) they had all been sold! Thank you to everyone who bought the cakes, helping to support the Carmelite Sisters.

Faith Diary
In this Sunday’s gospel, the poor blind beggar Bartimaeus serves as a model for all those who are marginalized, left by the side of life’s road, forced to beg while the rest of the world passes them by.  His poverty and blindness also mirror our own spiritual poverty, our blindness to the needs of those around us and to what the Gospel is asking of each one of us. This form of blindness helps us to avoid awkward questions of conscience, allowing us to turn our backs on the needs of others and simply ‘walk by on the other side’. It is only when, like Bartimaeus, we recognize our own poverty and blindness, and call out for help to Jesus that we can receive the miracle of restored sight  and true spiritual enlightenment.
Hibernating Animals
This week’s topic in Foundation Stage 2 and Year 1 has been all about hibernation. The pupils in Foundation Stage 2 all helped to make a nest for a hibernating animal. They collected leaves, sticks and feathers to make a soft comfortable site. Should we get any hedgehogs, snakes, door mice or tortoises visiting the school, I’m sure they will have a lovely place to rest in.
For Science, class 1B have been learning about hibernation.  We made hibernation dens for our Bear toys, and we produced some creative writing, imagining what it would be like if we hibernated too!
Looking Good
We have again had a busy session in our school garden.  We have squash and lettuce planted in the beds, with seedlings potted on in our recycled newspaper plant pots.  We have picked over 80 avocados from the school tree, some of which the club members have taken home to produce some creative food dishes, we have already had a delicious Avocado cake from Henrietta and Hermione.
One Million Children Praying The Rosary
On Monday 18th October the children at Loreto came together in the Palm Tree to join in a prayer initiative- ‘One Million Children praying the Rosary.’  Children from as many as 136 countries from different continents and even from countries torn by war such as Syria and Armenia joined together to pray on the day.
Last year nearly one Million Children united in prayer for peace and unity in the world and this year the aim was to surpass the one million mark.
It was an invitation to remember the words of Our Lady of Fatima who appeared to three children and asked them to pray for the world. Pope Francis dedicated this year to St Joseph, a dear Saint, who always listened to God and trusted in him fully. Fr Paul led us in prayer on the day and children from FS2- Year 6 prayed a decade of the rosary and said a prayer of consecration to St. Joseph.

Free Fall!
Year 6 pupils in Ms Lombard’s class investigate whether the weight on a parachute affects the time it takes to fall.

A massive thank you to all children who donated £1 last Friday. When added to money raised last term, our school has now raised over £580 which the Just One Tree charity will use to plant over 580 trees in a deforested area of the world.
