If you do one thing this week... The word 'Metaverse' is suddenly popping up all over the place in tech, strategy and marketing bubbles. Ben Evans' post on why it's too early to say exactly what we mean by the metaverse was a particularly good perspective. The other divergent but equally fascinating take that I read on it this week was Ian Bogost in The Atlantic who says that it is less a world in a headset and more 'a fantasy of power'. Interesting also that even Sothebys are getting in on the act with a curated NFT platform called 'Sotheby’s Metaverse' (HT @ZoeScaman for that one).
Links of the Week...
  • The Netflix results released this week revealed that Squid Game (I still haven't seen it) has been watched by 142m homes, which has far exceeded the previous Bridgerton record of 82m homes (HT @DanCall)
  • 'In six out of seven countries...Tweets posted by accounts from the political right receive more algorithmic amplification than the political left when studied as a group.' This was an interesting study by Twitter into the algorithmic amplification of political content on the platform.
  • It was well shared but omigosh Burberry's new film is quite wonderful (HT @thaz7)
  • Sad to read of Colin Powell's passing this week. His rules for leadership were eminently sensible. I particularly liked 'perpetual optimism is a force multiplier'
  • New volcanic islands appearing from the sea are maybe not that rare but what is rare is to have sunken ships from WWII emerge with them (forward to 2.50 on this video to see them)
  • And lo! It's the 200 best albums of the last 25 years, according to Pitchfork readers
  • 'I asked a group of 6 year olds to come up with a mantra to help us through life. They had some ideas.' Lovely thread
And finally... not one but two amazing visualisations of just how deep the oceans are surfaced (see what I did there) this week. This scrolling visualisation by Neal Agarwal just keeps on going and this ocean depth animation is just brilliantly done (HT @malbonnington). Quite incredible.
Weeknotes: This week I did my first in person workshop with the leadership team at Endsleigh insurance which was a bit like putting on a favourite old pair of trainers, and I also did some role interviewing on behalf of an academic client and a bit of petfood work (which sounds weird).

If you're interested in finding out more about my virtual workshops, consultancy, or you'd like me to talk (virtually or IRL) to your team do drop me a note.

Want to find out how I can help you or your business? Let's talk.
