This summer’s last virtual finale theme…

That’s right-- we are back on the streets, (in-person!), but still want to reflect about some amazing finales and programs we worked on this summer!

ROADRECOVERY premiered not just one, but TWO VirtualTrax Program Summer Videos in September involving 12 Youth Clubhouses from across New York State. We wanted to tie everything together, while also embodying a theme where actions speak louder than words. That it’s about more than just ‘talking the talk,’ but also ‘walking the walk.’ To be what and who we want to be, exploring our differences and cultures, building stronger communities and connections across the states (one of the coolest parts of being virtual!). Thus, our theme during these two late summer/early fall videos: Taking it to the Street. (By the way, some of our previous video finale themes have been Hope, Integrity, Courage, Responsibility, Leadership, and Optimism).

VIRTUALTRAX is supported by our non-profit's creative staff mentors from the entertainment industry working closely with statewide Youth Clubhouse mentors operating safely on-site and/or virtually with at-risk youth. As always in our programs, no previous musical/creative ability is required to engage VIRTUALTRAX. Programming is made possible through two federal grants from the US Department of Justice (DoJ) / Office of Justice Programs (OJP) / Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP).

Through these grants
ROADRECOVERY provides youth mentoring and peer support in continuous after school program cycles to reach youth and young adults by engaging Youth Clubhouses in our ongoing program partnership with the NYS Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS).

This past summer’s programs & Youth Clubhouses

The VIRTUALTRAX Summer Finale Videos involved the following Youth Clubhouses: The SPOT (Oswego), Restoration Society (Buffalo), Club Odyssey (Oneonta), The Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center (Manhattan), Housing Works (Brooklyn), Shinnecock Youth Clubhouse (Shinnecock Nation), Creative Connections Clubhouse (Amsterdam), Horizons Youth Clubhouse (Massena), Youth Clubhouses of Columbia-Greene Counties (Catskill and Hudson), TC Commons (Elmira) and Elmcor Youth Clubhouse (Queens). Youth Clubhouses provide a community-based, non-clinical setting for promoting healthy choices through skill-building, recreation, education, wellness, evidence-based prevention programs, and help youth find creative, meaningful activities to participate in that make constructive use of their time.

Taking it to the streets… and on the stage: our first ever GALA!
To support Road Recovery & Lighthouse Guild
Honoring Simon Kirke & Lauren Oplinger at The Cutting Room

While our theme reflected taking action, it also had a dual-purpose: to celebrate our last video finale, and our emergence back to in-person programs and events, one of which was our first ever GALA!

We had so much fun hosting our first GALA: 'A Visionary Evening & Concert', which was in support of both
ROADRECOVERY and The Lighthouse Guild, a non-profit dedicated to providing services that inspire people who are visually impaired to attain their goals.

Along with our ROADRECOVERY Creative Staff Mentors, who are all active musicians and performing artists, our other performers and speakers included:
  • Ken Dashow, New York’s Classic Rock Q104.3
  • Darryl “DMC” McDaniels (Rock & Roll Hall of Fam Inductee singer/songwriter, Road Recovery Board Member)
  • Simon Kirke, Free, Bad Company, long-time Board Member and Creative Staff Member.
The Gala honored two incredible people; Simon Kirke, who ROADRECOVERY recognized for his decade of humble service of “showing up and walking the walk” (yes, just like our finale theme) with generations of the charity’s youth. Lighthouse Guild honored Lauren Oplinger, a long-time volunteer and supporter and Vice President at JP Morgan.
