Farm Bites

In 2019, the Diversified Agroecosystems Research Cluster worked to establish the UBC Farm as a Long-Term Agroecological Research Station! Long-term projects allows researchers to ask deeper questions, observe changes over years and decades rather than months, and allow the results to have an even greater impact.

The UBC Farm is a core facility supporting teaching, research and community engagement for the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems, and serves as a long-term Living Laboratory where many of the research ideas proposed by CSFS Associates and external researchers are developed, tested and monitored.

Learn more about how we developed into a Long Term Agroecological Research Station, and to find out more about all our projects visit our Research Page.

#20YearsOfUBCFarm
#10YearsOfCSFS

Two long-term projects are underway:

🐝 A Living Lab for Biodiversity Monitoring at UBC Farm project enables us to see the UBC Farm as an agricultural, forest and urban ecosystem, which provides evidence of the links between biodiversity and food system sustainability.

💧 Living Laboratory for Water Sustainability at UBC Farm project allows us to evaluate water use reduction strategies to minimize the water footprint of agriculture at UBC Farm, support UBC’s Water Action Plan, and develop tools to help farmers reduce their water use.

Tree Planting Ceremony

There will be a special tree planting ceremony to celebrate the career and retirement of distinguished Land and Food Systems alumnus Harold Steves, (BSc Agriculture, ‘63) - the founder of BC’s Agricultural Land Reserve.

Come honour Steves’ accomplishments and watch the official planting ceremony held starting from 11:00 am at the UBC Farm's Pumpkin Fest!

Practicum

The 2022 UBC Farm Practicum in Sustainable Agriculture is now accepting applications

Come learn how to grow food with our hands-on practicum!

Gain a deeper understanding of agricultural management and small-scale farming and join a network of incredible people who will support you along the way.

Practicum participants carry out seasonal farming activities with leadership provided by UBC Farm staff in the greenhouses, gardens, fields, orchards, and at our farmers’ markets. In addition, the program includes numerous guest speakers, field trips to various farming operations within the province, and access to a plot at the UBC Farm for individual and shared production.

The UBC Farm Practicum can be taken as either a six-month (April – October), or as a four-month (April – August), experiential-learning program. The program is part-time (20 hours per week), and is designed for aspiring farmers, urban gardeners, environmental educators, and students with an interest in applying their learning about sustainable agriculture and food systems.

Application deadline: November 1st

Please note: To enroll in the Practicum program, you do NOT have to be a UBC student or post-secondary student; however, 6-9 academic credits are available for interested university students.

We Need Your Support!

While the CSFS at UBC Farm usually plays the role of helping to foster community, right now we need to turn to that community we helped grow to ask for help. During the COVID-19 crisis, we’ve had to decrease the number of workshops, markets, and children’s day camps available to the public and have lost revenue as a result.

Please help us out with $5, $15, or any amount you’ve got to give. Any little bit counts. Your gift will support our farm spaces in recovering from the impact of this crisis.

The UBC Farm does a lot with a little. With your support we can have an even greater impact as we grow over the next 20 years.

Our fundraising campaign is on until December 20, 2021. Spread the word!
