Bring some farm flavors home today!
One of the best ways you can support a small farm like ours is to let our products fulfill some of your holiday gift giving this year.

Jars of three kinds of jam made with strawberries from the farm.Over the past few years, we have been partnering with Terroir In A Jar to preserve our fruits and veggies at their peak ripeness, capturing different flavors from our farm throughout the season. Our selection now includes Strawberry Raspberry Jam, Strawberry Vanilla Jam, Bloody Mary Mix, Strawberry Tarragon Shrub, Strawberry Margarita Mix, Green Hornet Pepper Sauce, Hot Sauce, and more. By creating products that are shelf stable, we are able to sell them for a much longer window than can be done with fresh fruit and veggies. We are also able to offer a much wider selection of options and flavors to bring into your home and kitchen.

Three bottles of products made with produce from the farm. Each year as we plan our crops, we try to incorporate some fun selections that would be perfect for sending off to Terroir in a Jar. The fruits and veggies in our products were harvested with care by our dedicated crew and volunteers this season. We are proud to offer you our newest batch of our farm-to-bottle products.

If you are interested in bringing some of our harvest into your home, or perhaps appreciating others in your life by sending them a tasty gift, please explore our product selection at www.commonrootsfarm.org/shop. You can pick up on farm or have us handle the shipping. And don’t forget to pick up a Common Roots Farm T-shirt to show your support in a comfortable way! Short and long sleeve T-shirts are available on our shop page, too.

This holiday season, we hope you will enjoy some flavors from Common Roots Farm at your table, thus helping us welcome farmers of all abilities as we grow healthy food and flowers together.

Many hands are needed for a production farm to, in fact, be productive. Taking care of chickens, feeding and gentling sheep, weeding, sowing seeds, harvesting (oh, the harvesting!), watering hedgerows, and cleaning flower buckets are all part of farming on our small acreage. We have just completed our fourth CSA season and I am proud to say it was a big success! What is critical to that success is the help of all our volunteers.

Though it’s always the right time to say “Thank You!” to those who support us, this time of year we are especially aware of how much our volunteers do. As the growing season ends and our cover crops are being planted, we can take a breath and reflect on this farming season. We want to pause to say a hearty thanks to each and every one of you. To our generous volunteers, who have given us so much of your time, whether this year or sometime in the past, we are very thankful for you.

Thank you to our trainees, Annabelle and Laura, who joined us this season to learn about market farming and to support our mission. Thank you to all our weekly bouquet makers, Courtney, Lilloet, Linda, Christine, and Sarah, who made fantastic botanical creations to brighten many homes. To our sheep gentlers, Joanna and Bella, thank you for helping Peter, Pan, and Tink and their mamas to become a wonderful addition to our farm.

To this season’s regular field hands, Claire, Alex, Zena, Ryan, Emily, Ezra, Tom, Justin, George, Kowsik, Lauren, Tyler, Ben, Jordan, Angela, Karissa, Noah, Susan, and others, Common Roots Farm would not have been able to supply 50 CSA shares per week, donate surplus produce to neighbors in need, or make jams, shrubs, and sauces from our fruits and vegetables without your help. You rocked it!

Continuing thanks to both the Catholic Community at Stanford and the Cornerstone Evangelical Baptist Church in San Francisco, whose members have committed to the farm since its inception and continue to provide much-needed support through scheduled work days throughout the season. And last but never least, big thanks to Lori, who continues to be the secret ingredient to much of our success.

In this season where we take time to give thanks, Common Roots Farm is very thankful to each of you, as well as to our donors, past seasons’ volunteers, and everyone who cheers us on! Wishing you and those you love a very Happy Thanksgiving!
Entrepreneurial employee starts his own business
October was National Disability Employment Month and we are glad to feature our staff member, Matthew Shumaker, in this month’s newsletter.

Matthew began as an intern at Common Roots Farm several years ago, and he has been a great addition to our farm team. Matthew receives employment support from Community Life Services and comes to the farm twice a week to help with groundskeeping and other tasks as needed. He is especially drawn to working with power tools and, thanks to his skill with a weed whacker, contributes to weed control on the farm. Given our organic practices and the absence of herbicides on our farm, Matthew’s work tackling weeds before they go to seed addresses an important and steady need on our farm.

Matthew showing the back of his coveralls advertising his landscaping and gardening business. Matthew says he enjoys coming to work at Common Roots Farm and it has made him interested in doing other landscape and gardening jobs. Here he is seen sporting his new coveralls advertising his services.

Nina, our Farm Manager, notes that “Matthew is a valuable part of our team and we look forward to the days when he is here. We also count on him to do a good job so that we are dealing with fewer weeds among our crops each season.” Thank you, Matthew, for your contribution to our farm’s success, and we hope more business comes your way!
