ISSUE 452: LET'S GET BOO-TIFUL

Here's the bummer about Halloween this year: it's on a school night. It's the end of the weekend, yet with homework, practices, and school the next day-miles away.

The kids want to forget about homework, stay up late and eat candy with abandon. After all, it's Halloween! Parents, not so much. So, how do you make a school night celebration fun and memorable without turning your kids into sugar-hungover zombies at school the next day?

Start with dinner. Get responsibilities out of the way before you even set the table. Then, serve up a ghoulish feast!

  • Make spiderweb pizzas using string cheese to create webs and black olives for spiders.
  • Make creepy witch fingers out of baby carrots. Attach an almond sliver to the end of the carrot with a dab of cream cheese. Serve with a ranch dip "witches brew."
  • Or, shape ready-to-bake breadsticks into finger shapes. Roll them out, cut them to half their length, and shape them. Then, attach an almond for a fingernail and bake. Serve them with pizza sauce for dipping.
  • Breadsticks can also be easily shaped into spooky bones. Simply cut them to half-length, then cut a horizontal slit into each end. Shape the ends into the two knobby ends of the bone, pressing the middle to create the bone shape.
  • Or, shape ready-to-bake breadsticks into these adorable snakes with the addition of pepperoni and poppy seeds.
  • Clementines, tangerines, and oranges make adorable mini-jack-o'-lanterns. Simply draw faces on them with a black marker.
  • Or, make this skeleton sheet pan nachos with tortillas, cheese, and corn.

Now for dessert; that coveted mountain of candy produced by an evening's worth of trick or treating. We parents want to get the kids out early and home to bed at a reasonable hour, but there are obstacles. Not the least of which is your neighbors may still be wary about trick-or-treating.

Luckily, many local cities host fun Halloween events, complete with trick or treating, costume contests, and photo ops galore. And best of all, the festivities begin early-most of them around 5:00 PM.

Grab a group of friends and take a trek down to Old Pasadena for store-to-store trick or treating, a Halloween-themed family portrait, and a free movie in the One Colorado Courtyard.

Sierra Madre celebrates Halloween with small-town flair. There's a Halloween parade led by the Sierra Madre fire department, store-to-store trick or treating, and a costume contest.

Old Town Monrovia's library park hosts a Halloween celebration that includes a costume contest for kids and dogs, games, crafts, trick or treating, and more!

Head to Finkbiner Park in Glendora for a Halloween Carnival complete with games, a costume contest, a photo booth, food, and more.

Head home as it's getting dark, stop by a few houses in the neighborhood for a little more trick or treating, and then let annual candy count begin!

Happy Halloween!

PICKS OF THE LITTER

Boo at the L.A. Zoo

The annual event is back and in full swing since October 1, from 10 AM till 4 PM daily. Your family can take a spooky stroll down a haunted (yet festive) path, explore an extinct animal graveyard, take a picture in the green-screen photo booth with some of the zoo's most Halloween-y critters (weekends, from 11 AM till 3 PM), and a lot more. Check all that Boo has to offer.

Halloween at Kidspace

The Kidspace Halloween Event will be held on October 12th - 31st. Kids and their parents are invited to march or strut their way down the orange catwalk in the Kidspace Halloween parade (and, yes, costumes are encouraged). In addition, there will be pumpkin decorating, silly stories, and up-close visits with their "hairy-not-scary" spider friends.

Voices of the October Night

Teens and Adults can gather in a shadowy corner of the Altadena Library's parking lot for a reading of M. R. James' The Ash Tree with audiobook actor and narrator Simon Vance. The strange and scary story will be read on October 30, from 4:00 PM till 5:00 PM
