Thanks to our parks volunteers!
On November 4th, volunteers participated with City staff to plant 500 daffodil bulbs at the entrances to Poplar Springs Park and dozens of Cherokee Sedge and Splitbeard blue grasses along the dry creek bed. The beautiful yellow “Mordecai” Swamp Sunflower was planted at the west Marshall street entrance to the Park (see photo -Leigh Bragassa and Ken Jacobson also volunteered but left before photos were taken.)
Further enhancement to our neighborhood green spaces will continue through our partnership with the City’s Adopt-A-Park Program. Stay tuned!

Raleigh Leaf Collection Information

City of Raleigh Seasonal Loose Leaf Collection Begins Monday, Nov. 8
The 2021/2022 annual Leaf collection is upon us! The City provides the annual service to Raleigh residents who opt to rake leaves from their lawns into piles near the curb (not into the street). Specialized equipment uses a giant vacuum to collect leaves in residential areas. Residents can place leaf piles by the street for pick-up before the scheduled start date for their zone. Putting leaves out on the last scheduled day of leaf collection for their zone will likely not result in them being picked-up. The city will continue to pick-up bagged leaves curb side during regular yard waste collection. Many residents like to use the leaf mulch so it would be recommended to ask neighbors if they would like your bagged leaves before letting the city take them.
 Raleigh neighborhoods are divided into 12 zones for this service. Crews will start collecting in Zone 3 and continue to the remaining zones as weather and equipment allow. Please check the collection schedule or interactive map on when to place your leaves at the curb for pickup. Our community is in Zones 8 and 11.
ZONE 8: Those living east of Wake Forest Rd including the East Mordecai, Oakdale and Oakwood neighborhoods are scheduled to begin leaf collection Saturday December 6th.
ZONE 11: Those living west of Wake Forest Rd including the Mordecai, Pilot Mill and Capital Park neighborhoods are scheduled to begin leaf collection Saturday December 18th.
Other Impacts:
As always, weather can cause significant delays in the leaf collection schedule. Changes in schedule will be announced on the City’s website at raleighnc.gov/leaf. If you have signed up for Raleigh Water service alerts, you will be notified via text or email if leaf collection on your street is delayed.
Alternatives to Loose Leaf Collection:
We encourage you to consider using other options to manage leaves:
- Mulching – conserves water, helps prevent weeds, and improves the overall health of your lawn or garden, and also benefits the broader environment.
- Bi-Weekly Yard Waste Collection – The Solid Waste Services Department offers bi-weekly yard waste pickup. Use clear plastic or biodegradable paper bags - limit 15 bags per household per week.
If you choose to use our loose leaf vacuum collection service, you can get up-to-date schedule information and detailed guidance at raleighnc.gov/leaf, including:
- Yard waste, including loose leaves, generated by the work of a contractor is NOT eligible for curbside collection.
 Contractors must remove and properly dispose of the yard waste from your property after their work is completed.
- Do not mix sticks or trash in with your leaf piles – they break our equipment.
- Do not rake or blow leaves into the street. Leaf piles in the street are dangerous to motorists and cyclists.
- Leaf piles in the street block storm drains, which could result in flooding.
- Leaf piles should be placed in your yard, typically in the area between the curb and sidewalk, but close enough to the street for the vacuum equipment to reach them; generally, no more than six feet from the edge of the pavement.
- Hold off placing loose leaves at the curb until no more than two weeks prior to the expected arrival of the collection crews in your neighborhood.

Corner Pantry Items Needed!
As we welcome November and the season of giving and thankfulness, please keep our neighborhood Corner Pantry in mind for donations as you are able. It is at the corner of Glascock and Watauga Streets. We continue to welcome all to take what they need and leave what they can. The Corner Pantry has been utilized a great deal since being built, especially these past few months, so please help us maintain inventory by dropping off non-perishable foods as you are able. Thanks!

 Mordecai Historic Preservation Committee Survey:
Do you own a home in the Mordecai Place Historic District?
The Mordecai Historic Preservation Committee (MHPC) would like to ask the Raleigh Historic Development Commission (RHDC) for an updated architectural history of the Mordecai Place neighborhood. The City of Raleigh pays all survey costs and will share the results with homeowners. Undertaking the survey does not commit the neighborhood to any specific plan, now or in the future.

Volunteer with the Mordecai CAC- make your community a better place!
The Mordecai CAC is now the Mordecai Community Action Coalition. We are a coalition of multiple neighborhoods working together to provide ways for citizens to share information, meet each other, and take action in our community.
We are looking for a new MCAC co-chair to be elected in January 2022. This person will serve a two year term. If you are interested, we'd love to talk to you. Please contact Dana Deaton and Merrilee Jacobson at chair@mordecaicac.org with any questions.
The current MCAC boundaries cover several downtown neighborhoods, and include historic homes built in the 1800's up to brand new homes still under construction. There are also several townhome and condominium developments, as well as apartments and rental communities. The Mordecai CAC is located just north of downtown Raleigh.

- North Person/Blount

- Oakdale at Mordecai

The MCAC also includes the Person Street business district, Seaboard Station, William Peace University, Halifax Community Center, Mordecai Historic Park, the site of the future Devereux Meadow Park, and more.

The MCAC Leadership team is open and welcomes any resident of the Mordecai Community. Our core group of 15-20 neighbors communicates regularly to plan meetings and share ideas for citizen engagement. We'd love to have more neighbors get involved.
New this fall: The leadership team is now communicating via a Slack Workspace. All residents are welcome to join.

The Mordecai Community Action Coalition meets at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of the month, September-June. Currently we are meeting on Zoom, and we also post our meetings on Facebook. All residents are encouraged to get involved with the MCAC.
