Message from the Board

Dear Gardner School Community,

Last week’s Board of Trustees meeting spanned a range of topics, beginning with gratitude. We had an opportunity to consider what we’re grateful for, both in our lives, and as part of this school community. Among many topics, we expressed gratitude for Gardner School staff and the amazing learning that is happening for our students. We can’t begin to express how grateful we are that students are learning and growing through a dynamic academic experience here at the Gardner School. Music Night was just one of many examples of how Gardner School students are thriving.

Speaking of gratitude, Giving Tuesday is a little over a week away, and 100% of the Board of Trustees has pledged their donations. We hope you will join us in giving to the Gardner School.

Head of School, Emily Davis, shared a monthly Covid update, and with vaccines available to children 5 and older, Emily and her team have heard from families and students that many are choosing to get their children vaccinated and are celebrating this additional layer of protection for our community.

We also learned that the proposed DSHS facility is stalled in moving forward with its plans and was denied a conditional use permit because of stormwater concerns. We will continue to keep you apprised of this situation as it unfolds.

We are also in the midst of our financial audit; this process is a crucial next step as we apply for candidacy with NWAIS. Director of Business Operations, Sheila Hughes, and Emily Davis are working closely with our auditor, and the process will be complete in early 2022.

Speaking of accreditation, in last week’s meeting, we explored the NWAIS rubric to assess our progress as a Board. We marveled at how far our Board has come over the years, and we are excited to continue strengthening our work to best support the Gardner School.

One way we’re working to strengthen the Gardner School is throughout committees. Our Governance, Finance, Facilities, Development, and DEI committees, and our PTO, are excellent places to get involved and learn more about how we can create the conditions for all students to thrive. If you are interested in learning more about our committees, and you are considering additional ways to give at the Gardner School, email Head of School, Emily Davis (edavis@gardnerschool.org) and Board Chair, Lori Cohen (boardchair@gardnerschool.org).

In the meantime, we hope the upcoming holiday brings you rest and joy. We are grateful you are part of this community.

Thank you,

Lori CohenBoard Chair

Holiday Travel Recommendations

If your family will be traveling over the upcoming week, here are some reminders from public health officials for staying safe and healthy. By following these guidelines, we can celebrate together and keep our community safe. Please be extra vigilant about symptom screening in Remini, and email health@gardnerschool.org with any questions.

News from the PTO
The Gardner Gratitude Tree continues to grow! Don't forget to send in your leaf to add to our display. It's wonderful to see all the ways our community, including kids, teachers, and parents, are thankful for the Gardner School. We're thankful for you!

Last week, the PTO provided a warm and cozy soup lunch for our teachers, with mini pies for dessert. It was very appreciated! Thanks to all who helped bring that together for our staff.

Next week on Wednesday, December 1st at 9:30 am, the PTO will be meeting with interested folks to plan the celebration breakfast brunch for our students on Friday, December 17th. Join the meeting by emailing our PTO chair at ptochair@gardnerschool.org. Can't make the meeting? Stay tuned for more ways to help, either on the day of the event, or in the planning and preparation ahead of time.

Learning in Action

K-6 Virtual Music Night Success!
Thank you for joining us for a lively Music Night last Thursday! Our students shared their learnings about the history, culture, and language from
Latin America through stories, singing, dancing, and instrumentals. Your child's homeroom teacher will share the link to the videos in their weekly newsletter for you to watch again!

While we're looking forward to more in person events, virtual events like Music Night provide a wonderful opportunity for student supporters from around the country to tune in to the presentation. We had over 90 participants in our Zoom, and the students could feel the cheers from near and far!
Family Spotlight

The Glascock Family

We are Greg and Melissa Glascock, our children are Adalyn and Torson. We originally joined Gardner in 2019 when our daughter was in Tumtum. Our son is now in Tumtum and absolutely loves it! During our first tour we we were blown away with how much the Gardner school aligned with all of our ideals. We find value in hands on learning, being outside, children-lead learning and a strong community feel. Gardner checked all of those boxes and more. We are greatful for such a positive little gem in our community.
Community Connections
Grandparent Guest Presentation
We appreciate the time and talents of our grandparents and grandfriends!

Gardner grandparent and Rock Club president Margie visited our school to share her passion for rocks and minerals with our students! Our Loowit and Klickitat students benefit from her expertise as they are studying Geology for their current thematic. She even chatted with interested kids through recess, and answered all their questions about her rock collection!

Do you have someone who would like to stay in touch with the school and get connected? Share this link to invite them to our newsletter!
