A NOTE FROM PASTOR CARL
Hello Church!

Have you noticed that stores have already put up their Christmas decorations? Have you noticed that your favourite coffee shops have already introduced their Christmas drinks? Everything can be had with a splash of peppermint syrup and nutmeg!

I mention this because it strikes me as curious that the world is more committed to Christmas because of the wealth to be had at this season, than Christians are excited by the truth that this season reminds us of. Do we really believe that the Lord of the universe “took on flesh” and dwelled with us? Do we believe that we are saved from wrath and for a glorious mission? Do we know that we had been licked by the flames of damnation and only snatched from the fire by the work of Jesus on our behalf? If so, what is the proper response? In the New Testament, every time someone is saved, they seem to run away praising God and their lives are changed. What doesn’t seem to happen is that people are saved and then immediately settle into a routine of passively attending a service once a week and only engage with God, their Church community, and the Bible when it is convenient or when they are sufficiently guilted into doing so.

I long to see Redeemer be a church of committed Christians who are as eager to be with and know God as the businesses of the world are committed to earn another dollar. They spend every bit of energy, intelligence, and time they have in pursuit of money. Surely, we who have the good favour of the King, have reason to spend all of ourselves in pursuit of God! So many of us come to church with a scowl. We don’t “enter His gates with singing” but enter grudgingly. Let’s not waste another moment on grudges, on plotting revenge for offenses and rehearsing what we will say to that person who has hurt us. Let us get on with worshipping God, building community and inviting our neighbours to join us!

So, when you see another store that has “decked their halls” with garland and ornaments, rather than scoff at the commercialism of the holiday, instead be reminded of the reason we have to worship and be generous and to share the Gospel. Take heart Church! Christmas is coming and it reminds us that the King has come!

In Christ,
Pastor Carl
