Redistricting - What's Next

This week, as expected, the Legislature passed its redistricting bill. What wasn’t expected was the bipartisan opposition to Governor Evers and Democratic legislator’s maps.

So what comes next? Governor Evers has promised to veto the bill. After that, it will go to the courts. There are cases at both the state and federal level on redistricting. I don’t think anyone knows which court will ultimately decide on a map, but I do know that’s where this is headed, just like every redistricting for the last 60 years.

WI School Boards Leaves National Organization

You may be aware of the recent controversy surrounding the National School Boards Association (NSBA). To refresh your memory, NSBA sent a letter to President Biden, referring to some school board protests as “domestic terrorism.” Five days following this letter, the Biden Department of Justice said it would begin monitoring local school board meetings. Appropriately, this has generated outrage.

This week, the Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WASB) announced it would be leaving NSBA at the end of the year. I applaud WASB’s actions, and am pleased to see they strongly disagree with the NSBA letter.

Schulte Elementary Students Celebrate Family Heroes for Veterans Day

On Thursday, November 11th, we celebrate Veterans Day. In honor of their service and sacrifices, some participate in parades or events. The 5th Grade class at Schulte Elementary School in Sturtevant celebrated the heroes in their families as part of their Veterans Day celebration. Great job students and teachers! Happy Veterans Day to all service members and their families.

A 1,200 year old Canoe is Recovered from Lake Mendota

On Tuesday, November 2nd the Wisconsin Historical Society recovered a 1,200-year-old dugout canoe from Lake Mendota. This truly remarkable artifact was taken to the State Archive Preservation Facility and placed in a protective custom-build storage vat. It is quite the discovery. This canoe may be the oldest intact water vessel known in Wisconsin!

To complete their work, crews require a full closure of WIS 31 at the crossing from Monday morning, November 15, until Friday afternoon, November 19. Access to nearby businesses and residences will be maintained up to the closure. Please note that this closure is weather dependent and subject to change.
