15. Finally...
Back in November 2008, shortly before we moved up to West Kirby, I went up to London from Sevenoaks where we lived. I walked down Whitehall, as I had many times and stood with the assembled crowd, near the Cenotaph for the annual two minute silence. At five to eleven, from a side road off Whitehall, Three ex-servicemen, warmly wrapped up in their wheelchairs, were pushed slowly to the front,  proudly holding their wreaths, to be laid shortly. There was a hush among the crown who realised that we were seeing a never to be repeated occasion. These three veterans were the last survivors of the First World War. Henry Allinhgam,112, Harry Patch,110 and the mere boy, Bill Stone 108!
I am sure many of readers have relatives who were killed in the two world wars. My family only had one. Frank King who was Killed on the Somme on October 9th 1916. He has no known grave but his name is on the wonderful memorial at Theipval in Northern France. It is a fine memorial designed by Lutyens who also designed the Catholic Cathedral which apart from the crypt was never completed. Having found Frank's name, we noticed that there were random gaps on the endless list of names inscribed on the memorial.  We enquired at the information desk about it and we were told that when a body is found in the fields and a positive identification can be made, The soldier concerned is given a full military funeral , with a headstone of course and his name is then removed from the memorial. Obviously it doesn't happen too often today but it is not unknown.
Our music today was recorded at the Menin Gate in Belgium, the memorial dedicated to the men killed at Paschendale. Today, as they do everyday at sunset, members of the local fire brigade sound the last post as they have done since 1920!
I last heard this Hymn played at the Duke of Edinburgh's funeral. Not often heard these days but very poignant words, written at the end of the first world war, and a fitting tune too.  Oh Valliant Hearts to the tune "Supreme Sacrifice" is my choice for today and Remembrance Sunday.
Words by Sir John Stanhope Arkwright and music by Rev Dr. Charles Harris
