It's been said that freedom is not free. On Remembrance Day, our nation gathers to acknowledge the heavy cost paid by our military veterans in the years gone by. Some have paid the ultimate price and given their lives to the cause of freedom. Others returned bearing scars, both physical and emotional, that require a lifetime of healing. We can never forget this extraordinary sacrifice and should do more to acknowledge and support our veterans outside of just this one day. This morning, I was honoured to represent you and lay a wreath at the Town of York Cenotaph as your Member of Provincial Parliament. It was a moment of sombre reflection and deep appreciation.

As a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion Mount Dennis Branch, I recognize the long history of military service in our community. Just steps away from the Cenotaph stands the iconic York Memorial Collegiate Institute. Built in 1929 by the Township of York, this historical landmark is meant to honour the memory of young people killed in World War I and the sacrifices made in defence of our democracy. Though the building sits empty after the devastating fire of 2019, its mere presence is a reminder of the long history of sacrifice and the amazing resilience shown by the men and women of Canada's Armed Forces.
The stories of fortitude and valour displayed by Canada's military are truly inspiring. I encourage everyone to take some time today to read about the inspiring and diverse contributions of Canada's veterans. If you are able, consider a donation to the Royal Canadian Legion. You can also reach out to the Mount Dennis Legion with a message of appreciation, or to learn more about how you can assist them directly. Lest we forget, the work of supporting Canada's veterans must continue beyond this special day.
