Making Abstract Art with Midori Ryans
Tuesday November 23rd: 6:00pm - 8:00pm (PST)
On Zoom - ASL & Auto Generated Captioning Available

Abstract art at first glance can look easy, but then your first attempt looks like the aftermath of a toddler’s lunch. How do abstract artists do it? What is the difference between abstract art, and a plain mess? How do we guide the eye, evoke emotion, and generate curiosity with imagery that barely tells of a line?

In Midori’s workshop, participants will learn things like the rule of three, balancing soft and hard lines, guiding the eye, and creative spatter, and how to apply these to abstract art.

Supplies Needed: any basic painting surfaces and supplies

We all have an intuitive sense, but learning to listen to it takes time and practice. This workshop will guide you through tips and techniques for working with your intuition while making art. The discussions and exercises are designed to connect you with your inner voice and learn to overcome doubt. Join this workshop for a fun and engaging journey connecting with your creative intuition.

Lead by Laura Rechwan, who has many years of experience as a professional artist, instructor, and arts administrator. As the daughter of a Psychic Intuitive Medium, listening to her creative intuition has always been an integral part of her art practice and she loves to share her knowledge and passion with other artists.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities Virtual Closing Celebration!

International Day of Persons with Disabilities (or IDPD), was introduced by the United Nations in 1992 to celebrate the accomplishments and achievements that persons with disabilities contribute to our community.
The purpose of IDPD is to: Promote an understanding of disability issues; Mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of people with disabilities; and, Increase awareness of the value of integrating people with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic, and cultural life. In recognition of this day, we decided to close our exhibition on December 3rd and throw a Virtual Celebration!

Join us on ZOOM for an evening of art & community, including performances by two award winning spoken word artists, and a DJ set during our intermission!

This event will give us space to come together to watch some incredible performances by disabled artists, honour the artists who exhibited their work in the online exhibition, and celebrate ourselves and our community on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Disability Arts and Culture Online: More Than Just Access and Accommodations
November 17, 2021
10:00am-11:30am PST

with Jenna Reid presented by Kickstart Disability Arts & Culture
Access in the arts is a fraught practice both online and in person. Mad, Deaf, and disabled artists are all too familiar with the hyper focus on access and accommodations, as it creates the conditions for us to show up to the proverbial zoom room. However, when access and accommodations is all we talk about in relation to Disability Arts and Culture, we miss out on some of the most magical offerings that mad, Deaf, and disabled artists have to offer. This presentation will engage the online space as a space of both contentions and possibilities; ultimately asking questions about how we might crip online spaces as a creative practice that centers Disability Arts and Culture as an aesthetic practice.
