CulturePass is produced as a public service by the Tides Institute & Museum of Art.

Image: untitled; dream catcher, by Lori Lola Keezer of Sipayik. She shares: “According to Native American legend, it is believed that dreams, both good and bad, float through the air during the night searching for their destination. While sleeping under a dream catcher hung over the person's head, bad dreams get caught in the web to perish with the light of day. The good dreams easily slip through, working their way down the web, catching all the good energies of the beads and adornments as they float down to the dreamer's being.” Email Lori with questions about her work, which can be custom ordered.

Exhibitions

Tides Institute & Museum of Art

Maine Bicentennial Book

As part of Maine’s Bicentennial, the Tides Institute & Museum of Art mounted an exhibition of works from its collections ranging in date from 1820 to the present. In addition, the Tides Institute will publish a Bicentennial book featuring 100 works from its collections and the stories behind the works and how they came into the Tides Institute’s collection. Each week, one of the selected works will be featured in CulturePass.

This week’s piece is a modern chamber organ that was constructed in 1961 by the Schlicker Organ Company of Buffalo, New York. It was built for noted American sculptor, Richard Lippold, of Locust Valley, New York and designed for solo and ensemble Renaissance and Baroque music. It is not a church organ, but is intended for chamber music. Hermann Schlicker was among the immigrant pioneers in the United States of the Baroque revival. He was active from the 1940’s to the 1970’s. The instrument is entirely mechanical, except for the electric blower which supplies wind. Mechanical linkage from keyboards and pedals opens valves beneath the pipes. The design is rendered in oak and mahogany, and brass and steel fittings. The pipes are copper, oak and tin. After the death of the chamber organ’s original owner in 2002, the organ was disassembled and stored in a warehouse in Brooklyn, New York. The Tides Institute learned of the organ’s existence in 2016 from someone who knew the institute’s North Church space in Eastport, Maine and its exceptional acoustics. They thought the organ and North Church space would be a perfect match. The institute was able to purchase the disassembled organ and had the pieces transported to Eastport. In spring of 2018, the organ was reassembled and installed in the North Church space. That summer, an early music concert was performed in the space with Ensemble Abendmusik based in Boston with one of the world’s leading organists, James David Christie, giving inaugural performances with the organ.

Memories from Lubec Photo Art Exhibit

at Lubec Memorial Library – Lubec, ME
through November

“Memories From Lubec” is a work-in-progress series that is presented on the walls of the Lubec Memorial Library through the month of November. John Rule, who has been involved in photography since the 1960s and has exhibited internationally, utilized a century-old camera to capture these images, using large format techniques that produce silver-based negatives five inches by seven inches. Each is processed individually in his own darkroom, then produced as the contact prints seen here. The subject matter is Lubec, and only Lubec, over the last eight years.

For library hours, see this page. Each photograph is for sale at $50; proceeds will go to the library.
