Last Sunday afternoon a group gathered in the chancel of the sanctuary in celebration of giving thanks for God’s provision, love, and care.  We were encouraged by the reading of Psalm 145, sang songs of praise and gratitude, and shared something personal for which we are thankful.

As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving later this month, it is good to express our gratitude for God’s faithfulness as prompted in Psalm 145: “One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts … speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty … [and] celebrate your abundant goodness.”  Here are some of the things people indicated they are giving thanks for this year: arrival of rain, good health, a job with rewarding work, nature’s beauty, birth of a grandchild, vaccine available for children, no fire damage, family.  What would you add to this list?

In observance of our County’s recent health mandate to guard against the spread of the coronavirus, wearing of masks is required upon entering the church building and for all indoor activities; including worship, classes, and meetings.

Great Thanksgiving Banquet Food Drive

Each year we join with other Sonoma County churches in providing food for Redwood Gospel Mission’s (RGM) Great Thanksgiving Banquet. An estimated 600 families will be served on November 24th using procedures modified to comply with Covid restrictions.  Like last year, RGM has asked each church to provide specific quantities of items that will be assembled into the final bags.

This year First Presbyterian is providing three items: packets of gravy, canned sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pies.  Rather than each of us bringing these items to the church, the Community Service Team will secure the items and arrange for their delivery to RGM. After all, pumpkin pies require special care and transport.  We invite you to participate by sending a financial contribution of $11.00 per family (or multiples of 11 for more than one family) by Monday, November 22.  Make the check payable to First Presbyterian Church and in the memo line write: “Community Service - RGM Thanksgiving.” If you prefer to pay online, go to our Online Giving page and choose Community Service.
