Street Railways in Grand Forks, North Dakota: 1887-1935
North Dakota History, Vol. 44, No. 2, Spring 1977

A demand for better public transportation by Grand Forks' growing population in the late 19th century was the catalyst behind creating a street railway system. At a time when a full day of meals and a hotel room cost one dollar, the existing system of horsecabs was too expensive at fifty cents per ride. The streetcar was a welcome evolution.

Some luxury goods on exhibit at the Pembina State Museum include original pipes, metal utensils, dishes, and shards of original stoneware and china.

North Dakota World War I Memorials and Monuments

The United States officially entered World War I on April 6, 1917, and the fighting ceased on Nov. 11, 1918. During that time 35,448 men from North Dakota served in the Armed Forces. Over 1,300 of them did not make it back home. Women served primarily as nurses through the Red Cross or the Army Nurse Corps.

Many North Dakota communities constructed structures to commemorate the war. Shown here, the Memorial Stadium on the University of North Dakota campus was built in 1927 as a tribute to those from the UND community who died in World War I. Gov. Arthur Sorlie spoke at the dedication on Oct. 8, 1927.
