Meet A51- F3 SCLT 1st Nantan… before there were such positions

Hospital name: Shawn Heath

F3 name: Joker

EHer: Moniteur (Henry Duperier)

EH Story:  My friend and Duke Energy coworker [at the time] Henry and I were having lunch in early 2011 and we got to talking about exercise.  I told him he was looking fit, and he mentioned that was doing a Saturday morning workout at AG Middle School.  He invited me to come out, but I wasn’t really that interested because I knew it was a 30-minute drive from my house.  I saw him a few weeks later and he invited me out again.  This time I agreed, but I honestly thought it would be a one-and-done excursion.  Anyway, sometime in May of 2011 I participated in my first F3 workout.  I was really floored by the experience.  It just grabbed me… the hard workout, the banter, the feeling of being part of something that was new and special [and very much underground at the time].  I loved it and couldn’t wait to do it again.  I don’t remember missing a Saturday F3 workout during that Spring/Summer [or really the first few years, unless I was out of town].

First workout: AG Middle School in May 2011.  I don’t recall the workout having a name.  It didn’t need one, as it was literally the only F3 workout.

Nickname bequeathed by: Dredd named me “Ledger” at my first workout, then he renamed me Joker after I led my first workout in the June 2011 timeframe.

Nickname source: “Ledger” was based on my last name of Heath.  Then, Joker was obviously an extension of Heath Ledger’s role in Batman.

OG Story: In the summer of 2011, Dredd and OBT began talking about F3 expansion.  I had lunch with them – and Moniteur – and we decided I should start up a new F3 area/region near the Arboretum.  A couple of weeks later we met at Providence High school to scout out some potential workout locations.  This shows you how were definitely in the “start up” phase!  We settled on McKee Road Elementary as a good spot.  So, I started to get the word out, and on Saturday September 10, 2011 we had our first F3 South Charlotte workout.  There were ten guys at the workout.  We named the workout “Area 51” because it was close to Hwy 51 and because it sounded classified/top-secret.

Family: Wife and three sons [age 20, 17 and 15].

Work: City of Charlotte, Special Assistant to City Manager

Favorite CSAUP: St. Patrick’s Day Goruck.  It was a ball-buster.

Benefits of F3 to me: Exercise, friendships/camaraderie, and healthy competition.  When I started doing F3 I was 39 years old.  I had [and still have] great childhood friends from Maryland, but I hadn’t developed many new, deep friendships since my college years.  F3 really changed that.  For some guys that I knew already, as a result of F3, we developed much deeper bonds.  And many guys I had never met before F3 are now among my best friends.  There are guys I know I can count on in a big way if I ever needed it, and I hope some would say the same about me.  In that respect, F3 has been life-changing.

Other interesting facts:  My parents met in Bolivia; I was born in Alaska; I have a sister that was adopted from Chile; and my mother-in-law is from Spain.

F3 Nation continues to GROW and F3 Foundation continues to GIVE. Below are the objectives for Give2Give 2021, in addition to important updates about the IMPACT of Give2Give 2020.

Give2Give 2021 will provide further acceleration of F3 and the local regions as we:

Continue supporting the growth of F3 Nation. We're accelerating toward a goal of 250,000 PAX by 2025. F3 Nation will continue to rely on fundraising efforts - both through Give2Give and individuals, corporations and foundations - who recognize the world-changing impact F3 provides. Last year F3 experienced 35% growth, and there's plenty more to come in 2022.

Create a sustainable future for F3 and F3 Foundation. While F3 will ALWAYS be FREE of charge, it takes financial resources to operate a mission-minded organization that serves 50,000+ individuals in 40 states and six countries. Creating a lean operational margin will allow F3 to both be creative with our growth strategies and events (e.g. GrowRuck, 2nd and 3rd F events) and weather any future storms (e.g. COVID, Economic downturn) that may prevent us from reaching our goals to bring F3 to every Sad Clown in the world.

Grant more monies to local regions throughout F3's footprint. As regions accelerate their charitable impact, F3 Foundation seeks to provide more opportunities to apply for regions to apply for funding. The more funds we raise, the more we can give away. More regions have more impact - exponentially - will be part of how F3 delivers on the IMPACT that other groups only dream of. Last year's Give2Give provided more than $277,000 of charitable IMPACT through Foundation grants and localized regional fundraising.
Give2Give 2020 UPDATE:

Goal: Raise $200,000 in October 2020. Update: 208,876 raised.

The proceeds provided the following:
  1. Goal: Hire and establish a professional director to lead Foundation.
    • Update: Scratch & Win hired in March 2021. F3 Foundation had runway to create new Mission and Action, form a preliminary Advisory Board, and invest in fundraising software (eg CRM, Grant Management Platform, and Matching Gifts Software - to make it easy for PAX to seamless apply for matching gifts from their company).
  2. Goal: Continue to fund F3 Expansion and TRUEbadour Program
    • Update: Over the past year, F3 has experienced 35% growth from 160 Regions to 212 Regions (in addition to international launches) and 40,000 PAX to 53,000 PAX. In addition to operational costs the TRUEbadour Program was instrumental both in driving growth and more importantly, maintaining F3 culture as we accelerate.
  3. Goal: Build a general fund to be able to make grants to existing F3 Regions.
    • Update: F3 Foundation has made $159,550 in grants to organizations like Sleep In Heavenly Peace, CORE Wrestling, and International Justice Mission. Additionally, the Foundation has helped LOCAL F3 REGIONS raise $118,000 to: rescue those in modern day slavery, house the chronically homeless, scholarship GrowRuck participants, support F3 missions and culture internationally (Chimbote and Nairobi), and fuel explosive growth in the Katy, TX Region. More than $277,000 of charitable IMPACT thanks to generosity of PAX during Give2Give 2020!!
