CAMPAIGN UPDATE: WEEK 8
Remembrance Day is a special time for my family and many others who honour loved ones who gave their lives for Australia in war. I am incredibly grateful to those who serve our nation, knowing that they do not do it for glory but rather for each one of us here today and those yet to come. Thank you to every one of them.
As I reflect on those we have lost, however, I am acutely aware that we need to do much better as a nation to support those who do return from conflict. Two years ago, I lost a friend who had recently served. He was a truly incredible person and had medals to prove it. Yet when he came home, he simply couldn’t adjust, and when he turned to the system for help it wasn’t there. We must to do more to help our soldiers heal as they need to.
This week, I pay my respects to my friend, my great-grandfather who served in WWI, my great-uncles, grandfather and family friends who were the Rats of Tobruk, Light Horse Brigade, Infantry spotters and protectors of Darwin in WWII, and all the other brave men and women of our armed forces.
They have sacrificed so much for Australia, and I feel we owe it to them to do all we can to make our country the best it can be by holding ourselves and our politicians to a higher standard, and ensuring that everyone gets a fair go, no matter their background.
I love our country, and I know we can do better. Let’s change the climate in Canberra.
