Running the Race

Outside of teaching, one of my favourite hobbies is running. In the warmer months, I love to get out a few afternoons a week and run for a while. Some days I’ll run shorter 5-7km tracks and other days I’ll try to stretch it out to 15km.

Running is an activity that I’ve been sticking with for about 5 years now. In that time, I’ve completed 4 City2Surf competitions and 1 (unofficial) half marathon. My overall goal is to one day complete an official marathon. I’m not...

A Special Visitor
There were no sirens or flashing lights in the Year 1 classroom on Tuesday, but there was a friendly policeman who shared with us about his job and answered all of the Year 1 questions like "What is your favourite part of doing your job?" or "Do you know my Dad?". Snr Cst Greef popped in to talk to Year 1 about his job and to remind us all that Policemen are around to keep us safe. We loved it! Thank you Snr Cst Greef for visiting us. Thank you for all you do to keep us safe.
Year 2 Persuasive Text
Year 2 have been working on persuasive texts in English. This week students had the opportunity to write a persuasive text on the topic: Year 2 should have a class pet. It was great to see so many students remembering to state their opinion and include arguments. Some children are working well with paragraphs. Here are some examples
Surprises All Around
Students in Year 2 celebrated their teacher Mrs Greenland last friday with a party and movie. The students presented Mrs Greenland with some flowers, a special book and a personalised picture to thank her for being an awesome teacher.

Our Year 4 students also celebrated with their teacher Mrs Naqau by having a 'Mrs Naqau Day' surprise party. Ironically Mrs Naqau was also planning a surprise party for her students which led to Mrs Westcott juggling both secret parties at once.
Mrs Naqau's plan was to set up the party whilst the students were at swimming and surprise them when they returned from the pool, little did she know that when they returned the Year 4s were standing at the door with streamers in their hands ready to walk in and shout SURPRISE!
What a sight it was to see the delight on everyone's faces when they realised what was happening.
Safe Practices
Last Friday Snr Cst Daniel Greef visited PCS to talk with High School students about Cyber Safety, vaping and the legalities! He addressed the need for boundaries where social media is concerned. This is especially so when students find themselves being approached online by strangers. His message was very clear in that we should not interact with strangers over social media. Dan also made it very clear that individuals should make wise and thoughtful decisions about what they share online as the material is very difficult to get rid of once it is shared. He also specifically addressed students that underage vaping is illegal and that it is a criminal offence to have the device on you.
Students were very engaged in both sessions and asked valuable questions. After each session, students were given some time to ask any other questions and the number one question in all year groups, "can you handcuff me". They really enjoyed this and some of them even tried to escape. We would just like to thank Snr Cst Greef for making time to educate our students about these important issues we face in society!
House Challenge - Capture the Flag
Over the last two weeks our houses have competed in a capture the flag showdown. With our seniors out studying for exams we have been able to see some of our younger students step up and showcase their skills. We also had some stand-in House Captains take charge of running the event and organising their teams. We are very proud to see the next lot of leaders emerge and it is so good that students are willing to step up and take on extra responsibilities!
The results:
Game 1: Eagles defeated Lions 1 - 0
Riley McMaster scored the only point and Gemma Kite taking home the MVP title for her great tags
Game 2: Lions defeated Sharks 1 - 0
Liam Freeman scored the point and Lachlan Unger was awarded MVP for his long-legged gallop
Game 3: Lions v Eagles was a draw 1 - 1
Scores from Thomas McIntyre and Liam Freeman and MVP was Riley McMaster for his great efforts and hard runs
The Final: Eagles v Lions
An Eagle victory 1 - 0 with Joshua King scoring for the mighty Eagles. Oliver Mayo was awarded the well deserved MVP title for his leadership skills and planning in attack and defence.
A big thank you to Luke Hall-Matthews, Bella Gould, Mackenna Maguire and Ashlee Ross for their efforts in putting together an amazing House Challenge. Keep an eye out for our next one in a couple of weeks and get practising your softball skills!
Year 12s Gift

Each year the tradition for each graduating class is to present a gift to the school, a token of thank you for the years of service throughout the education of each student.

This year's class explored two options, one being a retro caravan converted into a coffee/food cart to be utilised on and off school grounds to train students in hospitality and to provide a service to the school and community. The second option was to construct a bicycle that could carry a fridge and offer an ice block service for the school.

After careful consideration the second option won out on the day. Based on access to the needed resources, time and cost, the bicycle conversion was selected as the gift to the school. Mrs Lynn was instrumental in ordering the bike and the fridge as the bases for a design to drafted. Caleb Hill, of the graduating class, was responsible for ordering the addition parts needed for the conversion, a thank you note to Kinselas Parkes for providing the needed components. Caleb was also responsible for fitting the new tyres tubes and wheels.

Mr Wynstra was responsible for the engineering of the front carriage and bicycle modification which was completed over a period of several weeks.

Laura Rusten organised the plaque that has all the graduating class names engraved and a thank you goes out to Nangar Gems Jewelry for providing this service.

The graduating class is to be commended for the fund raising activities held throughout the year which has help to provide the funds for this gift and huge thank you to the school community for supporting these events.

Year 12 brainstormed a possible name for the new cart and “PCS ICYCLE BICYCLE” has won on the day. The painting of the bicycle and all the stickers were completed here at the schools Industrial Technology facility.

It is the hope of the graduating class that this bicycle will be utilised for the existing ice block days raising money for Compassion, Sporting events - providing refreshments for competitors and spectators, cake stalls and other public relations activities on and off school grounds.

Well done Year 12, we know that this gift will be appreciated and well used.

School Leadership
Being a part of the SRC means that you can have an impact on what is happening around our school. Students get to learn skills including; teamwork, communication and commitment to a goal over their time in a leadership position. We are looking forward to seeing our new SRC take the reins from our current group later this year.

Senior School Captains speeches are happening on Monday 8th November along with Year 11 SRC voting and House Captain and Mascot voting.

Year 7 to Year 10 SRC voting will take place on Monday 8th November.

Students who would like to be House Captains or Mascots will need to nominate on Monday 8th November and be prepared to give a short speech on the same day to their houses.

If you have any questions please contact your students Roll Call Teacher or Miss Oates.
