Dear Friend,
We believe celebrating natural areas enhances a community’s value and improves health and wellness. Please read on and join our effort.
Join Nearby Nature and Partners for
Lincoln Creek Conversations
Lincoln Creek runs across Milwaukee’s northwest side in an open stream for 6 miles, from Havenwoods to Lincoln Park. Many of its segments are beautifully green and well cared for. Other segments are trash-filled, neglected and inaccessible. Nearby Nature is hosting a series of "Lincoln Creek Conversations" to try to understand the community's relationship with the waterway and how things can improve. This will be a series of walk-and-talk, Zoom and in-person meetings. If you (or your organization) see yourself as a stakeholder in Lincoln Creek's neighborhoods, we want to have you involved. To have a place at the table contact Steven Hunter by emailing steven@nearbynaturemke.org
Walk & Talk in Havenwoods, Saturday, Nov. 13, 10 a.m., Havenwoods State Forest, 6141 N Hopkins St.
Help keep our waterways free of litter and debris! As part of Milwaukee Riverkeeper's Adopt-A-River program, we are co-sponsoring this with Northwest Side CDC and Sierra Club Great Waters Group. We'll meet at the Bee Bus Sign at 35th and Congress, 4350 N. 35th St, Milwaukee. Cleanup supplies will be provided. Bring your own reusable water bottle or get a free Nearby Nature metal water bottle for participating!
On October 19th we broke ground and just two weeks and 150 volunteer hours later, this short "demonstration trail" is nearly completed. We used specialized trail-building tools like Pulaski's, McLeods, Rogue-hoes and shovels to level and clear a short trail that brings you to a wild area where you cannot imagine you are in the middle of the city. The sound of birds, crickets and a gurgling waterfall greet the lucky visitor. If you stay long enough, you'll find deer, coyotes, owls, herons, and hawks about. Come for the November 20th cleanup and stay for this Noon demonstration trail preview. Nature beckons you... nearby. You'll find photos and videos of the work crews on our Facebook page.
Building a Multiracial Environmental Community
Zoom Presentation, Monday, November 15th, 6:30 pm.
Nearby Nature proudly supports the work of Mandi McAlister and Hummingbird MKE who brought together 13 environmental groups and 90 individuals in an effort to disrupt white supremacy in the environmental movement. The work, of course, is ongoing. Tune in to this Presentation next Monday to get a full report on progress and next steps in this crucially important effort. This presentation is part of the Sierra Club Great Waters Group monthly program series. Register here to get the Zoom link.
