The UN's 26th "Conference of Parties" is taking place in Glasgow, and IDE members are there! Stay tuned to our social media to see how they get on. A summit of international leaders, negotiators, business leaders and of course citizens, with a focus on actions required to mitigate climate breakdown. The historic Paris agreement was signed at COP21 in 2015, and this delayed summit aims to review progress at 5 yearly intervals, particularly on countries' Nationally Determined Contributions or "NDCs".

Why does this matter?
The Paris Agreement was considered a landmark of international governments recognising the dangers of global warming and committing to less than 2C global temperature rise from preindustrial levels, and indeed a target of <1.5. Unfortunately the vast majority of countries are not on track to meet their targets, with a Nature survey of IPCC scientist this week demonstrating 60% of respondents estimate a rise of 3C by 2100.

What's Ireland doing?
Ireland's national delegation, led by Minister Eamon Ryan as well as representatives from across the government and its agencies, is involved in cohosting events in the areas of renewable energy, peatlands, adaptation and climate justice. Taoiseach Micheál Martin spoke at the world leader's summit, saying "Ireland is ready to play its part", but are we? Despite pledging a 30% reduction in methane and efforts to reverse deforestation, our National Climate Change Adaptation Framework remains less ambitious.
Any Taoiseach describing climate breakdown as an "existential threat" on an international stage is progress, but real action is required to follow through on such promises.

|
But what about health?
Climate breakdown & human health are inextricably linked, with the WHO publishing the COP26 Special Report on Climate Change and Health in October with 10 recommendations to inform governments and stakeholders ahead of the summit. This suggests a framework for prioritising equity and health in drafting climate & health policy
