Cathedral LOUDfence Support

A special LOUDfence has been in place at Carlisle Cathedral this week in support of survivors of sexual abuse.

The LOUDfence ran along the south side of the building, with people encouraged to tie ribbons to it, to stop and reflect and to pray for all those affected by abuse in any context.

It was in place until Wednesday 3 November – All Survivors Day – which also marked the end of a Safeguarding Season which has run at the Cathedral since Sunday 10 October.

Officially launching the installation, the Dean of Carlisle, the Very Rev Mark Boyling, led prayers and pronounced a blessing.

He told those gathered: “Our great hope is that as people tie ribbons to the fence, as they read the texts and think about what they say, there will also be ways in which God’s loving purposes are brought to mind and made real to us.”

In prayer he added: “Our great prayer, loving Father is that this Cathedral church may be a place of welcome, security and compassion for all.”

    Net Zero Consultation Launched

The Church of England is to consult dioceses, cathedrals, national institutions, parishes, schools, and other interested parties on a proposed routemap to achieve net zero carbon by 2030.

The draft routemap, published among papers for November's inaugural meeting of a new General Synod, suggests how all parts of the Church of England can make changes together to achieve the ambitious target set by General Synod in 2020 to be net zero carbon 20 years ahead of the Government’s targets.

It includes recommendations for building maintenance, heating and the availability of specialist advice for each setting alongside how the central Church and dioceses can offer support.

Everyone can respond. This consultation is primarily aimed at national Church bodies, diocesan structures (including DBFs and DBEs), and cathedrals. This is because it is about how the central and diocesan structures can plan for and support parishes and schools in achieving net zero by 2030, as well as tackling their own buildings, landholdings and work transport.

However, the views of others are vital to achieving the overall goal. Responses from parishes, schools, and individuals are welcome. All respondents will be asked to specify in which capacity they are responding.

            Queen's Green Canopy

Churches and community groups are encouraged to get involved with the Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) project.

This is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

People are encouraged to play their part to enhance our environment by planting trees during the official planting season between October to March and to map their trees via a dedicated website.

Subsidised Energy Audits

Buildings offer many opportunities to reduce energy use and costs.

An Energy Audit assesses how and where a church can reduce its energy usage and carbon footprint, a typical energy-saving calculation for a church is around 20% of its current consumption.

There are less than 90 subsidised Energy Audits available, the usual cost of an audit is £445 (+ VAT).

Qualifying churches will receive a subsidy of £200, making the price £245 + VAT. Full priced audits will still be available after the 100 subsidies have been allocated.

      Reimagining Care Consultation

The Archbishops’ Commission on Reimagining Care - of which Bishop James is Co-Chair - has launched a consultation on a set of values, informed by Christian theology and ethics, that it thinks should underpin a vision for care and support in England.

As well as consulting on the proposed values, the Commission is also asking for people’s views of what is good and what is difficult, challenging or missing about care and support currently.

The focus of the Commission is on adults with disabilities and those with care and support needs in later life.

Bishop James said: "The insights, thoughts and examples that we receive in response to this listening and engagement exercise will be vital for our work over the coming months. We look forward to taking the insights, ideas and experiences gathered, and going out into communities to listen and learn in greater depth from the people and groups who respond to us."

The formal period of Listening and Engagement will run until Friday 10 December.
