Virtual Veterans Day 2021

NE Transportation Goes Above and Beyond to Help a Veteran

Recently, our Northeast Transportation Coordinator, Dan Welsand, received a phone call from the Minneapolis VA Voluntary Services Office with a transportation request. The request was to assist a discharging Veteran to get from the Minneapolis VAMC, to International Falls within two days. Round trip this is well over 600 miles and a minimum of 10 hours of just driving for a volunteer driver not including likely traffic, construction, fueling time, and unpredictable weather.

As generous as all our volunteer drivers are, this unorthodox request was not something Dan was willing to present to any of them. Instead, Dan used his years of knowledge and networking and with the help of the phenomenal staff at the Minneapolis Voluntary Services Office coordinated with the Koochiching County Veteran Service Officer to get this Veteran home.

Despite the cooperation from the CVSO office, the DAV volunteer driver leaving the Hibbing location, will still spend 8+ hours transporting this Veteran back to Hibbing. This volunteer, Jeff Jarrett, like so many of our volunteers, is an absolute example of the unparalleled dedication our DAV Volunteer Drivers have to our Minnesota Veterans.

Not only is the Veteran able to return to the comforts of his home, over $1,000 of VA funding was retained for future emergent Veteran needs and an essential hospital bed was opened for another Veteran to receive care.

DAV Adventure at Williams Narrows 2021

On day one the Veterans reported at 1300 hours. All 12 participants that were selected made it to the event. Once they arrived, they were settled into their cabins to unpack and get familiar with the resort. After settling in a couple that have helped with the event for 5 years now hosted a pulled pork dinner for the Veterans before they headed out onto the lake.

At 1630 the Veterans were loaded into the boats and headed out to the lake for a little walleye fishing. We had strong winds this evening but we were able to stay close to the mouth of Winnie and despite the waves we were able to get on some fish. They fished for about 2 hours with each boat average between 20-30 walleye netted in the boat. With the waves quite a few fish were lost at the side of the boat. The Veterans came back in from fishing and were given snacks from the resort while the guides cleaned fish and packaged them for a fish fry the next day. Then after a few snacks it was off to bed.

Attention Chapter Leaders

In an effort to streamline report processing at DAV National Headquarters, we are transitioning from the hardcopy Annual Finance Report (AFR) & Officer Election Report (OER) Kit to a digital kit. Effective immediately, the hardcopy AFR & OER kits will no longer be available and only digital submissions of the AFR & OERs will be accepted.

The new digital OER Kit are available on our website at www.dav.org by navigating to: Membership → Members Only → Login with Membership Number → Quick Links → Elected Officer Resources →  Annual Financial Report/Officer Election Report Kit. Departments & chapters will then begin submitting AFR $ OERs digitally (pdf preferred) via email OfficerReportInfo@dav.org & Admin@davmn.org

We do understand that some may not have the proper equipment necessary to submit forms digitally, but most libraries and office supply stores do have equipment and resources available for such purposes. Departments are asked to assist chapters with digital submissions, as well, should they need it.

Thank you for your cooperation with this matter. Should you have any questions concerning this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me.
