Reminder: BC Government Extends LOTR Filing Deadline

The BC government has extended the deadline for pre-existing owners to file with the Land Owner Transparency Registry (LOTR), giving reporting bodies with an interest in land more time to file a transparency report.

The revised filing deadline of November 30, 2022 responds to concerns from legal professionals in BC that pre-existing owners need more time to gather information about ownership and prepare to file to LOTR.

LOTR Submission Process Enhancements

Improved functionality introduced to LOTR displays the legal description of land for all PIDs entered on a transparency declaration. In addition, filers can now easily upload multiple titles and charges to one transparency report from pre-populated .csv or .txt files, minimizing data entry for submissions with multiple properties. Filings to LOTR for October 2021

In October 2021, LOTR received 16,948 transparency declarations related to registering an interest in land and 5,037 transparency reports from reporting bodies. Since required filings to LOTR began on November 30, 2020, LOTR has received a total of 207,092 transparency declarations and 26,919 transparency reports.

LOTR was established in support of the Province’s comprehensive plan for eliminating hidden ownership of real estate in BC. The Land Title and Survey Authority of BC is responsible for developing and operating LOTR as set out in the Land Owner Transparency Act.

By November 30, 2022, a transparency report is required to be filed to the Land Owner Transparency Registry (LOTR) for land owned by relevant reporting bodies prior to November 30, 2020.

Property owners are encouraged to consult a legal professional to determine reporting obligations. Find out if you need to file at landtransparency.ca
