Kyle Milke
Kyle Milke was a 2017-2018 INBRE funded GRA in the lab of Jennifer Guerard at UAF. His project, Coal fly ash metal(loid) liberation and association with dissolved organic matter in aquatic boreal systems resulted in newly published research. The behavior of potentially toxic elements from stoker-boiler fly ash in Interior Alaska: paired batch leaching and solid-phase characterization. Read the complete publication.
Kyle graduated with his Master's degree in 2019 and is now a chemist at Bridger Analytical Lab in Bozeman, Montana. Bridger Analytical is an MT EPA and DEQ certified lab that analyzes drinking and wastewater within a ~150-mile radius of Bozeman. Kyle said he stays busy and performs various analytes, including 25+ metals, mineral, and microbiological content. He works in multiple departments with several different instruments offering variety. Congratulations Kyle!

Call for White Papers
Due November 8, 2021

The Alaska NSF EPSCoR leadership team is soliciting white papers in the area of "Human Dimensions" for its planned EPSCoR Trac-1 proposal. The deadline to submit white papers is November 8.
The planned proposal, entitled "Glaciers to Gulf," will address the research question, "How do the changing land-ocean connections alter the living ocean resources used in mariculture and harvested by rural communities?" White papers should address integration of knowledge and collaboration with local communities, harvesters, and farmers.

ONE HEALTH SEMINAR - Nov 8, 2021, 4-5pm via Zoom (pre-register here) - Melissa Chlupach of the UAA School of Allied Health will present "Alaska Traditional Foods Movement" highlighting the value of integrating Alaska Native traditional foods into programs and facilities. Hosted by BLaST, Dept of Vet Med, and Center for One Health Research.
IRVING-SCHOLANDER LECTURE SERIES - both lectures at Murie Auditorium UAF and online
Featuring J.G.M. 'Hans" Thewissen, PhD, Ingalls-Brown Professor of Anatomy, Northeast Ohio Medical University. Dr. Thewissen has studied paleontology, anatomy, and embryology of whales for more than three decades, and has traveled the world to study fossil and living whales. He has published more than 100 scientific papers, and wrote a popular book on the origin of whales, "The Walking Whales" (University of California Press). Each year since 1981, the Irving-Scholander Memorial Fund supports the visit of an outstanding life scientist to UAF to present a formal lecture and meet with faculty and students for informal discussions. The lectures and discussions are a fitting memorial to Drs. Laurence Irving and Per Scholander, who provided their colleagues with many stimulating ideas and seminal contributions to biological knowledge. The series is co-sponsored by the Institute of Arctic Biology and the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences.
