H2GO Receives Recognitions From the North Carolina Association of Government information officers

In November 2021, the North Carolina Association of Government Information Officers (NCAGIO) recognized H2GO in two of their awards categories. H2GO’s Public Information Officer Tyler Wittkofsky was recognized for the top award, the Ernie Seneca Award for Excellence in Public Service. NCAGIO also recognized H2GO for second place in the Campaign/Community Engagement category for their aquifer-sourced reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment plant communications plan.

They award the Ernie Seneca Award for Excellence in Public Service to current NCAGIO members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty while working in the communications profession for local or state government agencies. This award highlights the positive ways in which the NCAGIO member has contributed to his or her agency/organization, community, and colleagues.

H2GO RECEIVES UTILITY OF THE FUTURE RECOGNITION

In 2017, H2GO was recognized as a Utility of the Future Today by the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA), the Water Environment Federation (WEF), the Water Environment & Reuse Foundation (WE&RF) and WateReuse, with input from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This award was given to H2GO for continual community engagement efforts including the Cooking Oil Recycling Effort (C.O.R.E) and Operation Round Up program.

H2GO has once again been recognized as a Utility of the Future Today in 2021 for commitment and dedication to making the community we serve a better place for its residents. H2GO’s efforts in moving forward with construction of the Aquifer-Sourced Reverse Osmosis (RO) Water Treatment Plant was a major part of this recognition. Nearly a decade ago, the H2GO Board of Commissioners sought to investigate alternative water supplies, including the construction and operation of an RO treatment plant; eliminating dependence upon wholesale water providers, ever-increasing wholesale water rates, and contaminated surface water supplies from the Cape Fear River.

Fast forward to 2021, construction of the production wells, transmission lines, and RO treatment plant is in full swing and progressing on schedule. H2GO anticipates the start of operations in early 2022. Clean, contaminant free water for H2GO customers is nearly a reality. And the best news, no water rate increases are necessary for construction and operation of the RO treatment plant.

Brunswick County Now Accepting Applications for the Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program

Brunswick County is now accepting applications for LIHWAP, a water/wastewater assistance program, from all eligible applicants.

The LIHWAP, or Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program, is a federally funded program that provides emergency assistance to low-income households to prevent disconnection or provide assistance with reconnection of drinking and wastewater services.

LIHWAP assistance will be made available to households based on a priority group system. To lessen the hardship on those households that have already lost water services or are in jeopardy of losing water services, groups 1 and 2 will be served first. If funds are available, group 3 will be served after groups 1 and 2 are completed.

QUICK TIP

WINTERIZING YOUR IRRIGATION SYSTEM

As the weather starts to get cold outside, water can freeze and expand. This expansion can be detrimental to your irrigation system if it expands and cracks your pipes. A leak in your irrigation system can lead to increased rates! H2GO always has our customers best interest in mind, so we would like to offer some tips and tricks on preventing this from happening.

The best method to prevent this from happening is:
  • Turn off the water to the irrigation system at main valve.
  • Turn on each of the valves to release pressure in the pipes.
  • Drain all of the water out of any irrigation components that might freeze.

QUICK TIP

PLEASE LEAVE YOUR METERBOX EXPOSED.

Water meter box lids must remain visible. Please, do not cover your meter box lid with landscaping including but not limited to mulch, rocks, grass, plants, or straw. Those obstructions interfere with our remote-read meter system, preventing signal transmission of water meter reads to our office and billing system. When this happens, field crews must locate and manually read water meters.

Section 3.3 of H2GO’s Rules and Regulations
“d)  It shall be unlawful to plant, place or allow to become established, vegetation, other than low-growing grass, over or within two feet of any water meter box owned by H2GO. It shall also be unlawful to block or cover remote-read metering antennas with any type of landscaping ground cover including soil, grass, mulch, stone, or brick pavers. Metering antennas must remain exposed. H2GO will not be responsible for repair or replacement of any vegetation or ground cover removed to expose metering antennas. It will be H2GO’s standard procedure to remove obstructions that interfere with remote-read metering functions. Violations of this Section shall be subject to a $50 civil penalty after an initial written notice, and a $100 civil penalty for each occurrence thereafter.”

H2GO STAFF MAY BEGIN ISSUING PENALTIES ON OR AFTER 1/1/2022.
Fats, Oils, and Grease create major problems in our community sewer systems. Save our sewers! Used cooking oil and grease should always be disposed of properly. Never pour any type of oil down a drain or toilet! Even if the oil is poured slowly into a drain followed with hot water, this will eventually cause problems with your home’s plumbing and the sewer system as a whole. Join the C.O.R.E. Any used cooking oil or grease including vegetable oil, fish oil, bacon grease, chicken fat, and pork fat can be recycled. And, all recycled cooking oil will be used to create Biofuel. Cooking oil recycling reduces sanitary sewer problems and is good for the environment.
