Evidence to Action (E2A) 2021:

Reimagining Development Aid

Thursday, November 4, 2021

Thank you for your interest in our recent Evidence to Action symposium, "Reimagining Development Aid" on November 4th. Recordings of the event's sessions are now available on CEGA's website and below. If you are interested in joining future events, please make sure you are subscribed to our mailing list.

On Thursday, November 4th, CEGA’s annual Evidence to Action (E2A) symposium, "Reimagining Development Aid," explored important questions related to the targeting and delivery of aid and social safety nets, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries. E2A 2021 showcased results from CEGA research, as well as insights from government and NGO partners who are leveraging novel approaches and underutilized sources of data to dramatically improve crisis preparedness and response.

Cina Lawson, Minister of Digital Economy and Digital Transformation in Togo, talked about her experience launching "Novissi," Togo's flagship digital cash transfer program. Working closely with CEGA researchers and the NGO GiveDirectly, Minister Lawson and her team successfully leveraged novel data sources and methods to deliver cash to Togolese citizens hit hardest by COVID-19.

We also heard from the following speakers:

  • Emily Aiken (UC Berkeley), Machine Learning and Mobile Phone Data Can Improve the Targeting of Humanitarian Assistance
  • Simon Quinn (University of Oxford), Targeting a Job Intervention for Syrian Refugees
  • Ted Miguel and Michael Walker (UC Berkeley), Targeting for Impact vs Deprivation in Kenya
  • Brian Dillon (Cornell), Food Aid Targeting in a Fast-Changing World
  • Carly Trachtman (UC Berkeley), How Much do our Neighbors Really Know? The Limits of Community-Based Targeting
  • Reajul Chowdhury (University of Illinois), Improved Targeting in BRAC's Targeting the Ultra Poor (TUP) Graduation Model
  • Jonathan Proctor (Harvard), Improving the Spatial Resolution of UNDP's HDI Estimates
  • Juan Martín Dussán López (Prosperidad Social in Colombia)
  • Miriam Laker-Oketta (Research Director, GiveDirectly)
