The Eyes of the World are Watching! Pupils in the Upper school attended assembly this week to hear everything about the COP 26 summit. ‘The eyes of the world’ are on world leaders in November as they make important decisions that will shape the future of our planet. Children were inspired to think about ways to stop climate change and to understand how climate change is affecting people and communities around the world. Many took up the initiative to draw eyes to show that ‘the eyes of the world are watching’ as world leaders meet in Glasgow this week.
Little Bookworms! Year 4 thoroughly enjoyed some quiet reading time during their library session.
Materials Year 1 have started a new topic on Materials. In the photo below they are asking each other questions regarding the properties of the materials to work out which one they had on their back.
In the other photos they are completing a challenge in which they had to build the three pigs’ houses out of an array of materials.
Year 1 Literacy This week class 1B enjoyed listening to a new story in the library called ‘How can you lose an elephant?’ By Jan Fearnley.
We have started a new science topic; Everyday materials. The pupils played a game where they had to ask each other questions to find out what material they were - it was on their back so they couldn’t see it! Then pupils became builders for the afternoon; pupils were given different materials and had to work as a team to make a house for one of the three little pigs.
Marine Life The Nautilus Project delivered a presentation to the pupils in Year 3 and 4 this week. Lewis Stagnetto discussed our coastline with pupils, and he showed them some photos and videos of the animals that reside along it. During the Gibraltar Marine Vertebrates presentation, pupils learnt about different types of fish such as Agnathas, (Jawless fish) Teleosts (Bony fish) and different types of turtles, birds and mammals. Lewis raised some important marine environmental issues with the pupils, and he discussed how we can all make changes which are required for a better future.
House Competitions Just before Mid Term, Year 5 took part in a Inter House Tag Rugby tournament. It was a very competitive affair, with great speed, skills and teamwork shown by all. All children took part in this tournament and there were several close matches. However, St Catherine’s proved too strong for the rest, winning all their matches. St Philomena’s and St Anne’s finished in joint second place, with St Joan’s in third. Congratulations to St Catherine’s.
For Year 3 and 4’s first Inter House competitions of the year, each house took part in various Basketball skills related challenges. Challenges included a dribbling task, a passing task and a dribbling and shooting challenge. Children got the chance to earn points for their team, based on what position their team finished for each challenge. The team with the most points overall were crowned champions. For Year 3, the overall winners were St Philomena’s and for Year 4, St Anne’s came top.

Faith Diary In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus warns of the futility of showing off and seeking to impress other people - or even God! - with material possessions, insincere piety or large, attention-grabbing donations to the Temple from ill-gotten wealth. Jesus is not at all impressed by any of this public display, and makes it very clear that if that wealth comes from oppressing rather than helping others, it will receive short shrift in the courts of his Kingdom. He is moved, however, by the true generosity of the poor widow whose gift, though materially small, is great in the selfless generosity and deep humility that will certainly find a rich reward in heaven.

COP26 Art Pupils have been looking at how they can upcycle objects found around our shoreline to create framed pieces of art.
Gold Book Well done to pupils in Lower Primary and Foundation Stage 2 who were presented with their Gold Award certificates and gold pencils.

Walk for the Wild! Year 3 and 4 pupils supported 'Walk for the Wild' on Friday morning, walking to Little Bay and back with their teachers and our community police officers.
Walk for the Wild makes it fun to change our habits for our own health. Besides the savings on our carbon footprint, an early walk every day is linked with both physical and mental health benefits! We are supporting this change by highlighting Gibraltar’s convenient distances by walking. Walking, as opposed to using cars for transport, also helps to save native wildlife, habitats and beyond. Our walk ties in with our #TrafficFreeTuesday walks to school which happen every Tuesday from different points around Gibraltar.
