The Cello Museum Weekly Newsletter

Volume II | Number 45 | 6 November 2021
Dear cello friends,

It’s hard to believe November is here.

We’ve got a lot going on this month, as you can see from my Curator’s Corner.

Yesterday, I met Hilary Wang in anticipation of our Cello Book Club meeting tomorrow. I’m really looking forward to talking with Hilary and Julian (her son and illustrator/co-author) about their book, The Enchanted Cello Case. They'll be joining us all the way from Germany - I hope to see some of you in the Zoom meeting as well!

I am very sad to report that Erica’s husband, Tim Fox, lost his battle with cancer on November 5. My heart goes out to Erica and her family. Thank you to everyone who sent good wishes and supported her family through their ordeal which now begins a new phase. To learn more, or to send additional support directly as they adjust to the reality of Tim's passing, you can reach out to them.

Please stay well and keep in touch. I always love to hear from you.

Brenda

Tis the season...
Cello Museum Apron
As we give thanks that no one (yet) has invented the Pumpkin Spice Cello, the falling leaves are a reminder that holiday treat season is at hand. Pick up an embroidered apron in our Museum Shop to protect your clothes from lingering flour/spices/batter or sawdust/varnish/rosin - or any other residue stemming from your more creative endeavors.

While you're there, revisit the special collection of items related to our first exhibition, Innovations in Cello-Making Materials.

Prized Far More: Thomas Hardy and a Century of English Church Cellos
Did you know that Thomas Hardy was also an architect?

He did a lot of work on English churches, removing west galleries where church cellos and other instruments were played.

Through this work, he had firsthand experience of these spaces (which no longer exist).

He also designed church architecture - like this altarpiece.

Congratulations to our Cello Artists!
2021 Halloween Contest Winners
We received some outstanding submissions in our first ever Halloween Art Contest.

The challenge was to create an original drawing, photograph, sculpture, or other visual art (basically, anything visual-but-not-video) that featured the cello.

Congratulations to our winners, and thanks to everyone who submitted their art! We are encouraged to see so much talent and the ways in which the cello muse crosses borders as well as creative boundaries.

Cello Birthdays
Cello Birthdays
Our Cello Birthdays series celebrates cellists, composers of cello music, cello makers, and authors of cello books - everyone who has made a contribution to the cello world.

Let us know about any birthdays we should consider adding.

Please keep in mind that we highlight those who have media (videos, photos, audio recordings) that we can share online.
From Dr. Leonovich
Jean-Baptiste Bréval
Dr. Leonovich does not have any new editions this week, but we will hear from him later this month in an article about Jean-Baptiste Bréval, whose birthday is today.

In the meantime, you can browse his sheet music store.
