DROP OFF INFO FOR YOUR HOLIDAY GIFT BAGS

We are thrilled to have given out so many tote bags to be filled and donated to the 'lady of the home' of the families that the Cascais Freguesia supports. Every single member has been enthusiastic about wanting to help and a special thank you to those of you who have filled extra bags with your goodies. You are all so generous and it shows.
(suggestions: soap, shampoo, makeup, chocolates, hand cream, shower gel, hairbrush, nail polish)
The main drop off will be on Tuesday, December 7th, during the coffee morning hours between 10:30 and 12 noon at the Cascais Market. We will pack all the bags into our version of Santa's sleigh (most likely Heather D's car) and present them the following week at the town hall. Our appointment to do this is on Monday, December 13th at 3pm and you are invited to come by if you're in the area. The Junta de Freguesia is next door to the large Farmácia Cordeiro, (close to the Baia Hotel), set back from the street, painted pink and flies flags! (see pic below).

ARRAIOLOS GROUP
By Kay Baker
Shortly after joining IWP in 2009, I looked at the activities that were available and thought that Arraiolos, the making of traditional Portuguese rugs (‘tapetes’) sounded very interesting, even though my mind inexplicably created a scene of women sitting or kneeling on the cold flagstone floor of an ancient cathedral surrounded by candles!
Around the same time, I met a lady at one of the then monthly lunches. We became good friends and as she was a member of the Arraiolos group she invited me to go with her to find out more about it.  Imagine my relief when we arrived at a modern St Paul’s Church in Estoril to find a warm meeting room upstairs with plenty of tables and chairs and facilities for making tea and coffee!  There were many ladies in the group of different nationalities who were warm and welcoming.  The co-ordinator of the group at that time was Carmen Smith and she and my friend taught me how to sew a ‘tapete’.
It is basically a long cross stitch with a few variations to form a pattern and is easy to learn.  You can be creating rugs and carpets in no time at all, even if you have never picked up a needle.  You have to try it!  You might find it’s not for you, or you can love it and become completely addicted.  In the beginning we have small samples of canvas and wool for you to try out, and if you decide it’s for you, you will buy your own patterns, canvas and wool from one of only a few shops who sell the materials – in Parede, Amoreira and Lisbon, and you can buy kits and materials online.  The cost of materials to make a rug measuring approximately 150 cm x 100 cm should be between €70 - €100. We will teach you how to do this amazing traditional craft and help you along the way at all times.
Over the years we have had as many as 15 members in the group or as few as 2 but we have always managed to keep going. Currently we are meeting on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, from 10.00 till 12.00.  There is a charge to each member of €3 each session, €2 of which goes to the church for the use of the facilities and €1 is kept by us to pay for tea, coffee and biscuits.  There is (paid) parking all around St Paul’s which is easy to find, in Avenida Bombeiros Voluntários 59, 2765-202 Estoril.
Contacts for the group are Rie Kikuoka, email riekikuoka@gmail.com and Ann Wetering de Rooy, ann.weteringderooy@gmail.com
We would like to keep the group going for many more years to come and would love to you see there.  You won’t regret it!
New Covid Rules

Just to remind our members that COVID restrictions will change as of December 1st, 2021.
As before, IWP will follow and enforce official guidelines at our member events to help keep our members safe and healthy and to contain the spread. For further information click the link below:
https://www.safecommunitiesportugal.com/latest-news/
We ask that any member who is not feeling well, or has potentially been exposed to the virus informs a member of our board as soon as possible.
In the unfortunate event that one of our members or their guest has tested positive after attending an IWP event, we will inform all members who attended that event, alerting them to the situation.
The regression to stricter measures is unfortunate, but an appropriate response is needed to help keep everyone safe. We will get through this together! Thank you.

Best wishes,

Louise Strasenburgh
